If the Cubans could watch Junkyard Wars or Monster Garage, or for that matter have the resources to acquire the requisite tools and materials, they probably wouldn't want to leave Cuba in the first place. As it is, they used the RWD driveshaft to turn the prop on their floating truck and therefore required RWD. Sure, MacGyver could have done it with an blender, two coconuts, and a hairpin - problem is they don't have a Senor MacGyver to teach them.
