Not sure how each works, but there's the difference. | Interlaced means half your pixels are mirrored. Progressive means each pixel is original.

A 57" and 48" Mitsubishi HLP in living room and basement. Then 32" and 27" Sony's in the bedrooms. I really would like to go LED as they look amazing but can't justify it as the 57" is only a year old. |

My Dad's house has a 58" rear projection TV thats like 6 years old. Its HD and still looks great, even by today's standards. |

Sammy 50" DLP, 720P (I believe) in the great room, almost 6 years old with no problems. My wife says she gets a headache after watching it too long. She may be sensitive to the color wheel flicker.
Sammy 32" LCD, 1080P in the den, about a year old, the main set I view. The small den gets quite warm with the computer, cable box, and TV.
Toshiba 27" Cinema Series CRT in the bedroom, about 11 years old with no problems, seldom used. |

Below are a couple links regarding the subject WSJ Article Wired Magazine's Take
Now back to the OP's topic, I've got 1 tv in my humble abode...which works well since I'm the only one living there. 37" Olevia LCD 1080i model, bought in the fall of '06 when I was in college and hasn't failed me yet. The box is starting to get a little ragged as I've moved that tv about 6 or 7 times, but it still works just as good now as the day I got it. Thinking that maybe end of next year will be time to upgrade to a 47 or 52" LCD or plasma and then wait it out after that until OLED's get to the point where they are competitive in price/capabilities. |

Nice projector! I keep thinking that at some point I would like to have one of those, but at this point I just can't justify it when I'm the only one living there and have so many other projects in the house that would add value to it. |

If you have a tv picture that is 30 frames per second then the set has to refresh the picture twice as fast as that (ie it refreshes the screen 60 times a second, displaying the odd lines of frame one, then the even lines of frame 1, then the odds lines of frame 2 etc all the way for 30 frames).
This means you get some flicker and you are never looking at all the lines that make up the picture at any one times, only the odd ones or the even ones.
In a progressive scan signal all the lines are drawn (odd and even) one by one, in order, from the top of the screen. This is how almost all computer monitors have worked for years.
So a 1080p picture looks better than a 1080i picture.
However...
Just buying a 1080p LCD tv does not necessarily mean you are getting a better picture than a 1080i tv. Why? Because if the source you are watching it only outputting 720p then the 1080i tv (which is 720p native) will look better than the 1080p which has to make up lines to fill the gaps to match the number of pixels on the panel. |

Are all 1080i TV's 720p native display? If I were to change my Xbox to 720p resolution would I get a better picture than 1080i? Or am I confused? Damn you TV acronyms! |

They have 720 rows of pixels so display 720p HD natively, and can display 1080i HD (as the interlacing makes up for them being 360 rows short).
1080p TV's are native 1080P, they have 1080 rows of pixels. They can also display 1080i and 720p (but the 720p is not their native res so they have to make up the lines which means the image won't be quite as crisp as a 720p tv).
Whether you get a better picture using 1080i or 720p will depend on your eyesight (some people hate the flicker of interlaced images), what type of game you are playing (ie if the whole screen image is moving around quickly like in say a first person shooter) and whether you need the extra pixels of detail in 1080i vs the smoother less artifacted motion in 720p. |

I've got a 47" Philips LCD over the fireplace in the living room. I like the way it automatically adjusts to what comes out of the Motorola DVR/cable box as the content changes.
There's a 36" RCA LCD in the back bedroom.
I had a 42" Gateway plasma in the living room and it finally had so much burned into the background that I couldn't stand to look at it.
