My grandfather had the most beautiful '84 Cutlass Supreme Brougham I've ever seen. Dark Blue w/ Dark Blue velour seats, 307 V8, and sexy set of chrome wheels. The car was totaled when I was young, but he said if the car wasn't he would still have it to this day. |

The '80s Cutlass Supreme Brougham Coupe (or Calais coupe) is my favorite G Body of the '80s. The Regal is #2. |

Very nice, super clean cars.
Sub, my main Cutlass was a dark green, with the period avacodo green bucket seat interior.
The 442 was white with orange stripes. | Gotta post them whenever Olds porn comes up. Those pics were from 2000. I had a lot of fun with those cars and built them both up with the help of friends. I miss projects like that but have no time for that kind of stuff at this stage in life. |

Practically no backpressure - it's a swept-back log design which dumps into 3" ID galvanized dry pipe on each side, then through bell reducers to 2 1/2" ID pipe and glasspacks. These marine work engines are cammed and loaded to turn about 4200 rpm max, the peak of their hp/torque curves, so high rpm gas flow doesn't enter the picture. A race 455, however, would use a set of high-rise s/s headers with raw water cooling bleeds, and those 455's will turn 5500 all day. You don't ever twist any Olds 455 much over 5500 - you'll need a shovel to pick up the parts unless you do some crank work and go to lighter rods and pistons.
The fittings in the front are brass pipe barbs for water cooling. Look at the left picture - the squarish fitting at the left - rear - of the manifold is a cast iron 3" pipe adapter for straight pipe. There are several types of marine manifold risers and adapters for just such arrangements....... |

What is the reason for running cooling for the exhaust gases? Is it another source of heat for HVAC systems?

You're not cooling the exhaust gas per se: you're cooling the cast iron manifold. The brass barbs you see are the inlet/outlet to a water jacket which surrounds the internal manifold. No such thing as engine HVAC in these critters - the engines run in enclosed bilges or boxes with little or no air circulation. An uncooled exhaust manifold would burn the (any) boat in short order. That's why the pipes and manifolds are water cooled, or, in the case of dry pipes, lagged with thick woven silicon cloth. (Silicon, not Silicone)
HVAC for boats usually comes from MarineAir or equivalent reverse-cycle air conditioning units - the same idea as a heat pump. Running one way, it removes heat from the air in the cabin and transfers it to water. The other way, it removes heat from water and transfers it to the cabin air.
Look hard at the left side of the pic (click to enlarge) and you'll see a wrapped header pipe leading aft and turning up behind the engine controls bulkhead.
The two large black hoses connect to thru-hulls which lead to 40 feet of 1 1/4" copper pipe under the boat which functions exactly like the radiator in a car, so the entire system is coolant-cooled, not raw water. |

My uncle just bought a used boat with dual Buick engines so I'm hoping to learn a little bit in the coming months about this type of thing. |
