I still wonder why Ford never put the 5.8 or 5.4 in Town Cars.

My uncle had an '85 and I got to drive it when I was 16. Comfortable enough, but a total dog for power. Made my aunt's '87 FWD Fleetwood look like a rocket. Neither compared to my '77 CDV.
Also, the Lincoln interiors never measured up to the Cadillacs IMO. |

I have a friend with an '85 Crown Victoria Wagon, with that TBI 302 (130hp lol) and he says it's the slowest car he's ever driven. Another friend had an '86 Town Car (Multiport Fuel Injection) and he says that's a lot better....about as fast as his '97 Town Car. |

I like them too..... I chose my Fleetwood over an 88 Town Car Cartier in black (and black was hard to resist, but Autumn Maple Firemist held its head under the water until the kicking and bubbles stopped....) but the Fleetwood was tons sharper in design. Squared wheel openings with the half skirt in comparison to the rounded ones on the Town Car with no skirt at all. The Fleetwood had the Lincoln beat in the rear the most, you just can't beat the tails of the Cadillac. It's like that quote in that newer CTS commercial....
"Make 'em hate to see you go, but love to watch you leave...."

I agree, the Fleetwood has the better design, in and out. But, the Town Car offers fuel injection a (optional) digital dash with trip computer, better looking instrumentation either way, and a more modifiable motor. If anyone ever wanted to make an '80s Town car go faster... |

If anyone ever wanted to make an '80s Town car go faster... | It is a more efficient engine and fuel delivery system, no question. It seems like Cadillac just couldn't get that part right in the 80's but yeah having owned both a 302 and my 307 the 302 was faster and performed better, but I have a twisted love for my 307 that no one understands, it's purely sentimental. The difference was that my Lincoln was a Mark VII LSC with a high output 302, which I don't think the Town Car had. The size and weight of both cars were pretty different so it's not really a fair comparison.....
If I had the money and the room, I'd get a black 88 Town Car with a burgundy valour interior with the digital instruments and add it to my fleet. I do like them enough to buy one and enjoy it. |

If anyone ever wanted to make an '80s Town car go faster... | They did fix a lot of things on the 1990 Brougham, including the motor. There are more speed parts for a 350 Chevy than any other motor ever. Even the slower 305 chevys are an easy swap to a 350. |

The TC is still a relative dog to this day. If I recall, it's down at least some 50hp if not more to the DTS. However, it doesn't seem to have ever affected the car's sales, especially to fleets and livery. I mean, it's just not a thing you want to go all that fast in. It is one of those "waft along" vehicles with which you don't need speed to convey how little you care about the rest of the world at that moment. Not tinkering with a good thing is the reason there are 2003 and '04 TCs on Autotrader right now with 400,000 miles on them, and that's not a typo.

From my experience those that drive Ford cars over GM say that they are more reliable. I never parted out a Cadillac, but I have parted out a fully loaded Pontiac Bonneville SSEi and a Lincoln Town car of the same year. Let me tell you the Pontiac had much more hidden behind the dash, under the hood, and in the trunk compared to the lincoln as far as electronics. I will assume a Cadillac would have even more. There is just a lot more to go wrong on a GM and usually it is the electronics that go wrong in my experience. The average person has some mechanical skill to diagnose problems, but most have trouble with electronics. With that said I am still a GM man until the day I die! |

Anyone heard that new Tim Mcgraw song where he says something like, "Ride through West Virginia in the back seat of a Cadillac"? |
