Those are nice cars, you did well for yourself. The 3800 is the second most prolific engine for mod parts (only the "Mouse motor" GM smallblock 8 has more). You can make yourself a real screamer out of that if you so choose but it's quite capable as it stands. I drove a 1998 LeSabre with the naturally aspirated 3800 for 8 years and it was a good car. Loads of torque, rode like a sofa, and, unlike the smaller Regal, had LOADS of interior room. It was one of the largest cars available at the time and really harkened back to earlier days in its design. I upgraded so many things it ended up as a mishmosh of bits and pieces from all different years and types of the H-body. In the smaller Regal, the 3800 S/C will be awesome. The two-and-a-half tonne LeSabre could move around quickly, and had great acceleration at high speeds, which surprised many people on the highway who thought "Grandpamobile". That car ought to be quick indeed! The S/C cars also benefit HUGELY from free-flowing exhaust and a cold-air-intake; the H bodies shipped with a decent CAI that was easy to improve, not sure about the Regals.

I agree, the 4.9 and sc3800 didn't exactly go thru trannies all the time. Many cars have 150k+ on the original trans. Just because someones went out under 100k and then went out again after a who-knows-what rebuild, dosent mean it needs to be babied and always wondering if its gonna go.
I'm pretty sure the 60k GM trans service is just a regular drop the pan, fluid/filter change and not a "flush" where it gets hooked up to the machine, those are known to cause problems.
My fathers '99 GTP had a "performance shift" button on the shifter, latter GTP's lost it, I don't know if the Regal ever had it, if not I heard of it being added, makes the trans shift firmer and iirc at a higher RPM too, also makes for a more sporty feel under part throttle too. |

Transmission flushes are NOT recommended on cars with more than 100k. The flush is one of those services that you must start at an early age and continue with it. If you start late, you run a risk of unsettling debris and wreaking havoc on the valve body. I had it done at 73k on the Merc and had no problems what so ever. That is what I'll do at 60k.
The early Regals (mine included) have the performance shift button. I did notice that it holds the fears longer as well.. |

The "soft" flushes use the transmissions own pump to pump the fluid through and are less potentially harsh.
Above 100k miles though, either one is a gamble as Chad mentioned.

Nice Buick Chad! I've always liked the s/c 3800, glad you got that instead of the regular 3.8 V6. Quite a bit of a change going from the big flashy Benz to something so under the radar.
Our family had a 1991 Regal, it was maroon in and out, with the 3.8 V6 It gave us excellent service until it was 13-14 years old and had 200k+ miles on it(I'm guessing the mileage, the odometer quit at 94k). It really fell apart quick after two teenage drivers though. The clearcoat failed, a/c went out, and the trans crapped out all within 6 months. |

Good choice, very nice ride.
I loved my 01 GTP. You have lots of fun with this. Just change the oil and keep up the tranny maintenance and you will go 260,000 just like I did. |

Just had a flush done on the Buick Century at 141,000 miles. It was slipping terribly and shuddering like mad. After a BG flush and a treatment of BG conditioning fluid, it drives perfectly.
The old ATF was black and badly burnt. |
