Flood pics!

Here's the backstory. Last Sunday and Monday the temperature never got above 0, -40 windchills and all that. Tuesday we got roughly a foot of snow. Yesterday it all started melting as the temperature got up in the mid 40s. Today we had a high of 62 thanks to some warm air from the Gulf, which brought thunderstorms and an inch of rain in the morning. Frozen ground + lots of rain + lots of melting snow = record flooding in December for Chicago. We have a creek in our backyard which flooded about half the yard. It also runs parallel to the street I live on, it flooded over a lot and they closed the street.

Here's the view from the Target down the street which is right across from the creek. Luckily only one side of our street floods so I was able to take the long way there after my morning coffee run. There's a retention pond on the right.

There's a few houses real close to the street there, you can see just how high the water is by looking at the mailbox.

Here's my backyard. Throughout most of the year the water in the creek is never higher than a few feet. To the right is a small mad-made stream that runs into the creek; that completely flooded over also.

The evergreens were planted pretty close to the edge of the creek for reference. To the left you can see our crazy neighbor's driveway (with their own stop sign ) Water was flowing over that so they didn't go anywhere today.

An actual piece of the polar ice caps

The creek also runs under the new I-355 extension they just built last year.

Here's the view heading in the direction of Target where the creek next to the road started to run over. Sucks for most of the people who live back there because they were essentially stranded the whole day.

Re: Flood pics!

Some in a Lexus actually tried to drive through it Needless to say his car was sitting there in the water for hours with the hazards on. Before I went inside I saw a squad car drive over there to look at it, for all I know it still might be there now.

Then while walking back to the house with my coffee I thought to myself "when will I ever get a shot like this again?"

Luckily we got away with no damage whatsoever. The Escalade and Seville in the garage built up a lot of condensation from the rapid temperature change, that's about it. I walked back there not too long ago and the water level already went down a lot, now we're scheduled for 20 degree weather and flurries overnight. Whoever made up the saying about Chicago having 4 seasons in one day wasn't effing lying.

Re: Flood pics!

Sheesh!

Thank goodness the cars are ok. That's all that really matters anyways. Am I right?

Re: Flood pics!

I am so tired of flooding. Every time it gets this bad they close Rt. 53 where it goes by the Morton Arboretum and I then have to take the back asswards way to work. I am tempted to go look at downtown Naperville. When we had those really bad storms over the summer it completely flooded there and the businesses were actually putting sand bags out front.

I know what ya mean... I hope i don't find flooding on my way to work. Last time it flooded I had to take all sorts of different routes. (I work in Des Plaines)
