My Miami adventure with a Land Rover Discovery...
Been down in Miami since the beginning of the month.. I am actually getting tired of it and am ready to head back to Chicago.
I will be here till the 1st of November, then back to the cold weather (or so I have heard).
It has been constantly in the mid 80s here with sporadic freak rain showers.
A good friend is letting me borrow his 1997 Land Rover Discovery. It is not as bad as I thought it would be. It only has 50K miles on it and was only used to pull his dual jet-ski trailer. Runs pretty good and seems tough... but gets 13.8 mpg in the city with Premium fuel... ouch, but it is a free ride!

I then looked on eBay and Craigslist and saw that these are selling for $2-10K! The 2003-2004 body style looks the best. I would never buy one, but I was amazed to see the prices. This '97 I am driving seems to be pretty reliable. I am in 80 degree weather daily and stuck in traffic with the a/c on full blast and it doesn't even flinch... no wonder these are used in the desert!
When I get back I have to get working on the '96 Fleetwood to get it ready for Chevy Vette Fest. I am going for trophy number 3 this season!
Take care!

Re: My Miami adventure with a Land Rover Discovery...
I lived here almost 3 years ago and I used to want to move back... not anymore. I don't want to live in Chicago either because the snow & cold weather... It really makes me appreciate growing up in Virginia Beach.

What's that got for a motor? Isn't it a relatively huge six cylinder?

Ill take 80* with the trades in Maui all day everyday.
People say dumb shit like "I like the seasons". Me too, thats why I like living somewhere that doesnt have the shitty ones. Its a warm Spring all the time and if you live Leeward you may only get 4" of rain a year or you can live windward and get 300"+.
People shouldnt live anywhere snow can be found outside your door and I cant wait to get the hell away from it. The reason it so expensive to live there is basically because its worth it!!

An old Buick V8 powers that Discovery. The engines seem to be the most reliable thing on those trucks.
RIP, JD! You are missed.

I've been wondering what you've been doing lately down there...or, more importantly, driving

Unique choice, and decently fun. Not efficient, but that's not its mission in life.

Re: My Miami adventure with a Land Rover Discovery...
I have been meaning to email you but it has been hectic here. The Land Rover and I travel between South Miami Hospital to Mercy Hospital to Coral Gables Hospital and then clinic.
So far I have logged 970 miles on the Land Rover. Besides a faulty window regulator on the driver's side rear window, all has been good & dandy. The gas mileage is horrid, my Father's 2007 ESV makes 12 mpg in the city. I thought the 4.0 would do a tad better, but I guess not.
My friend offered me the Land Rover for $3,800... I passed.
I have four more days down here, I just hope it keeps going till then!

I wonder how it stacks up against a G Class?

3800... hmmm... I'd take it for 3000. Its still nice even though its British-built.

Series II came out in 1999, but the updated headlights came out in 2003.

Love that color combo -- in and out....
Even an '04 in warranty isn't bad.........
The revised headlights make a huge difference.
