I'll be one of the youth that admits to using a phone during class sometimes... it's an annoying habit (like biting fingernails), but I'm not always focused on my phone. Just this past weekend, my razr fell between my seats and when i powered the seat forward to get it I heard a crunch. Well, there went my phone! However, it was very nice not having people constantly text or call me.
If the teacher collected phones at the beginning of class, i'd turn it off, take the battery off and hand it to them. Not a big deal at all... and the kids who complain are the worst. |

I'd just turn the phone off and put it in my bag. I would not surrender it.
How do people differentiate between all of their phones at the end of class?

Plus I wouldn't be surprised if there weren't two similar phones in the whole bunch - it's not like those big gray Motorola flip jobbies or later those Nokias everybody and their mother had way back when.
Honestly... I really couldn't care less if they actually put them in the basket. In fact, I'm willing to bet that as the semester goes on and on... more and more simply "won't bring their phones to class," even if they're really just turned off and in their bags.
But if I see them using it or hear it go off... into the basket they go. |

Unless of course you actually did mean "county". In which case you can ignore the peanut gallery (me). |

In which case you can ignore the peanut gallery (me). | Well Nazi... while I may or may not have intended to say "country" and said "county" by means of typographical error... Since I am in fact teaching at a county college, I could simply fall back on that as an excuse... depending entirely of course on what my original sentiment was meant to be in the first place...
Although technically speaking my friend... seeing as how you are the product of another country's culture and educational system... There's no way I could rightfully categorize you into my general ramblings... I mean.. You may or may not have picked up on what could or could not have been a typographical error... So that says something contrary to my overall observations... lol! |

I thought you were 55, then if I recall you said you were in your early to mid 20s. I dont really care how long your posts are. I'm just teasing. |

I was a promiscuous child and all... but not to that extent. Anyway... I'm a Nixon-baby if that helps narrow things down for you a little
With that said... Is that some sort of new sport - synchronized spelunking and bacon eating? Is that a timed event or are you awarded points? |

I've taught a few classes, varied in nature. I agree with the phone confiscation and the fact that in general terms these younger generations are severely lacking in social graces including respect for others and proper classroom etiquette.
First, it's your class, you are in charge and responsible for providing the proper learning atmosphere. Like being captain of the ship you might say. You make and enforce the rules and disallowing phone use is not unreasonable in this venue.
Second, as you've stated, they've paid to be there, they are now adults, they should have no problem giving their full attention to the class. If they do have a problem with that then they are not mature enough to be there and should drop as they are not only wasting their time buy yours as well and taking up room that an interested student might fill.
Third, no matter how quiet they text, they are a distraction not only to themselves but to those around them and to you the teacher too. That means they are stealing from their fellow classmates.
I've said in many other posts that I've observed selfish and conceited attitudes in many of the youth that I've worked with and encountered. They may be educationally ignorant but they have self esteem that rivals the physiques of body builders on anabolic steroids. |

I've also had the privilege of working with students with good attitudes and willingness to learn. It is very satisfying to see them learn and grow. |
