| Another boat engine...... For a mindless Saturday evening........Just finished this puppy.....a 1971 Olds 455 bored to +.060 = 461. Boat engine, mid-rpm, high torque, built to swing a 22"x20" 4-blade prop in a 38 foot 7-ton workboat. Hooked to a 2:1 Velvet drive this thing will pull the pier to sea. Lotsa tricks....8 quart Milodon pan, remote oil change setup, shot peined rods, forged crank (stock polished to -.002"), Keith Black 9.5:1 pistons, moly rings, roller, double chain, Edelbrock dual plane, Mondello street ported heads, goodies.
Owner will pay $7,300 in and running. These monsters are a hoot to build and are absolutely bulletproof. This engine will run well over 5,000 hours at 2,500 rpm and redline at 5,600. We run 15W-40 Pennzoil Long Life truck oil, modified fram HP-2 filters and Melling pumps set to bypass at 60 psi. Oil cooler temps are set to run 210-230 at cruise rpm. Oil pressure will run at 55 psi all day. See the gauge tapped into the front oil gallery ? That monitors pressure while I drive the oil pump with a 5/16 socket and drill on the distributor drive to prime the oil passages before initial start.
I know where there is a brand-new, fully dressed, in the crate 1975 Olds 455 11:1 engine still wrapped in oil paper. It will come home in my truck bed late this month. $3300. |
