| | | Check out the newest edition to the family stable! My new li'l bro-in-law just picked this up as his first car, ever!
1953 Ford Mainliner. It's got a six in it, runs on six volts and has the oil filter accessory option. That's about all I know of it right now. Body is very straight, fires right up and runs really well...needs brake work and there is VERY little rust.
More to come next time I check the thing out...I just saw it long enough to snap a couple of pictures this time. |

| | | Re: Check out the newest edition to the family stable! Actually, a V-8 three speed 2 door sedan 1953 Ford Customline was the car in which I was taught to drive. I was ten years old and living in Sao Paulo, Brazil. My family had a large country home without phone service...it was a year's wait for a phone in those days. My Dad decided I needed to know how to drive in case there was an emergency ( the driving age in Brazil was 18 at the time). My Dad had bought the Ford as kind of a stop gap car until our family was together after a move from California to New Jersey. He paid $1600.00 for on the Fleet Plan from RCA. The grill promply rusted (Korea War restrictions on use of chrome) and it was not very luxurious (to put it mildly) compared to the Packards we had had in California. My Dad was ask to head up RCA's opertions in Brazil and we were on short notice to go, so as you had to have owned your car for at least a year before importing it to Brazil the Ford became our family car for the next three years. Dad had all the chrome rechromed and the car repainted and reupholstered. It actually turned out to be great transportation and handled the less than wonderful streets and roads of Sao Paulo better than the big luxury atomatics that the Diplomatic families had (diplomatic immunity meant they weren't subject to the same import rules). I used to drive it all around the coutryside with my Mom supervising ........ not much chance of getting pick up as there were only 5 police cars in the wholle city at the time. Best part was when we left Brazil in 1957 we sold the '53 Ford for $8000.00!
I also drove a 1953 Ford Mainline 6 cylinder that belonged the Girl Scout Council in New Jersey (my mother was exec. director) after I got my license. Used to run stuff out to the camp in the Summer time to help out.
Both cars were good straight forward transportation ...... and in stock form good for cruising at 60 mph. Certainly superior to most of the European stuff that was abundant and very mechanically and electrically troublesome in Brasil of the fifties. Cadillac really was rthe standard of the world and even our "everyman's" cars were desired for their comfort and reliabilty. |
