A good example is Bill Lear's attempts at a steam driven bus. GM knew that if they announced it wasn't technically feasible they'd be accused of ulterior motives but Lear was an inventor with credentials and would be believed. GM put up the capitol, Lear got his basic physics lesson, built his flopperoo, and the idea fell to oblivion.
