The other day I parked my 95 Seville and the key won't turn all the way back and come out. I have played with the shifter, moving it into all gears, back into park, turning the wheel etc. Still wont turn back all the way. I had this problem in my 77 Trans am, but that was a piece of linkage that needed adjusting. I called the dealer and they were not familiar with this problem. Any idea:rant2: s where to look first?

There is a cable that goes from the shift lever to the steering column to lock it. Find the cable and see if it's binding. If it is ok, there may be a problem with the locking linkage in the column.

Update, my buddy who's a mechanic said there is a reverse lockout selinoid that could be bad too. He had me start the car and see if I could put it in reverse without stepping on the brake peddal and guess what.....it will shift into gears without steppin on the brake! Anyone ever replace that part? He claims (on the Pontiacs), it's under the console attached to the shifter. If it's not working properly the key won't turn all the way back and come out. Anybody else ever have this issue?

Pull the shift bezel up and take a look. Its probably similar on your car.

It also looks like I don't have to push in the shifter button to pull it from park to drive.....or to put it back into park FROM drive. It must be related as well. How hard is it to remove the top part of the console? I could probably get away with removing the wood part and shifter knob to get in there. Since mine is a 95 model, I don't even have to fool with heated seat buttons.

I had problems with my 94seville sts ignition switch security system locking me out, saying restart in 3 minutes. Anyway, not sure about the top part of console, but the underneath panel just popped out, was a metal plate underneath that snap in place decorative panel with 2 bolts holding it in. From there you might see better what to get at. Hope it helps. In my case just needed to get to the wires coming out of switch.

Oh by the way, I sprayed WD40 into the switch area, and it did not affect operation. Might be enough to loosen up your key?

Just take out the 2 screws in the bottom of the cup holder, pick that up out of the way and then carefully pop up the clips under the wood panel. Be glad you dont have heated seats, the wood around the buttons is so thin that it cracked on mine. I had to take it out to get to the radio.
The shifter handle is a little difficult to remove without scarring the leather so be careful pulling that U clip out.

I do have heated seats, but the buttons are not located in the wood section (up by the shifter)like they are on the 96-97 models. My buttons sit where YOUR drink cup holders are. My drink cup holders retract into the console armrest. Your directions (97STS4ME) should be very similar. It's the "clips" that hold the wood part on I don't want to bust trying to remove. My shifter is also the "T" handle style instead of the palm pad used on the 96-97's, but they probably come apart the same. Thanks for the info, and I will try to do this.

Update: Fixed! It was the Brake Shift Selenoid on the front of the shifter (under the console top). Wasn't too tough. Had come unspooled and was able to fix the part, lube and put back in. If it happens again, I'll order a new part.
