I have a history paper to write this weekend (7-12 pgs.) comparing and contrasting Peter the Great and Catherine the Great reign in Russia. You can state your opinions on their rule as Tsar/Tsarina, all I can get from you guys is very helpful thanks!

It's going to be difficult since Catherine II was a woman. Historians didn't really care to document too much of her rulings and mostly focused on her personal life. You'd prolly be better off looking for this crap in your text, that's where your teacher gets his/her informantion from. Also write between 7-9 pages, anything more than that is obscene and your teacher doesn't wanna read all that shit anyway......

It's been a while since I had to concern myself with Russian history but if I recall, PtG was a bit more "enlightened" than most - Peter is known as the first Tsar to open up relations with the west, and began the process of modernizing Russia, insofar as the early 1700's were 'modern' - but 1700AD Russia was closer to 1300AD western Europe. Died of a bladder infection and gonhorrea, if I recall. Generally well regarded in the scale of Russian rulers, probably would get about a 6.5 out of 10 from the majority (of course, you can never please all the people all the time, and compared to the rest of the guys in his spot, he was probably better than 95% of them..)

CtG was a bit of a snooty b**ch, taking many and varied lovers during her reign, tossing them aside when she was tired of them. Word was that she even had affairs with the murderers of her husband, though there is little proof that she had anything to do with it directly. It was his murder, of course, that put her on the throne. She had little or no regard for the serfs of Russia - who even today roundly dismiss her name. She'd be lucky to get a 3 out of 10 on the "Benevolent Russian Rulers" scale...

Russian history is fascinating - and little known in the West - when one studies the history of this people, one begins to understand a little more about their culture and background - it explains a lot. Their distrust of neighboring countries, internalization of much societal business, etc etc. We in the West tend to forget that Russia pretty much jumped from a serf-driven, aristocratic oligarchy based on an agricultural economy, to a socialistic dictatorship with a state-controlled economy within the space of a decade or two - skipping over the somewhat democratic capitalist economies that most other Western nations had. Russia, for example, has NEVER, up until recently, had a "small-business entreprenurial" class - no private business, no private technology, no private anything. Even agriculture went from huge serf-powered estates controlled by the very rich, to huge, worker-powered estates controlled by the Central Committe. Family farms were, and are, unknown.

It also helps to separate the "Russian" from the "Soviet" - they are not interchangeable terms, in reality.

I wanted to say that first!
Catherine Zeta-Jones made a fine Catherine in the A&E movie.
I'd Google them. A helpful response here may take too long! History buffs can be very narrow-fielded.

Organization can make or break a thesis or any kind of report. Decide what you want to say, first - determine what, if any, point you want to make pro or con. Organize a short outline of major points to back up your stance. Start writing - and don't think about editing anything out until after your done - in other words, write about 15 pages, and then worry about cutting out the fluff and junk.

If you want, shoot the epic over to me via email when you're done and I'll cast a critical eye over it - my address is in profile, I believe, or my website as well.

Russian history fascinates me. Peter the Great was cool, but Ivan the Terrible was the best! Atleast the most interesting. The last Czar (Nicholas?) and Czarina was an interesting story too, with Rasputin and Lenin and his gang...

Wikipedia...... (shakes head)

I typed my 100 page term papers on an old electric typewriter I bought at the police auction.... and made corrections with "white out"...

I Luv Caddys is scratching his head, what's white out?? It was like white paint in a little bottle, and you'd paint over the wrong words & letters, and blow on it for awhile 'till it dried, and then type over it again....

I didn't walk uphill both ways to school, but I did type my papers, honest...

--------------

Oh,
Peter the Great saw Catherine the Great
Walking the streets of the city.
Said Peter: "Hey Cat, can I have some of that?"
Said Cat: "Stay away from my kitty!"

But Peter the Great wasn't easy to shake,
(if you've tried shaking Peters, you'll know).
Catherine the Great shook as much as she could,
But it only made Pete's interest grow.

"Dear Cat, dear Kitty, dear P u s s y!" said he, "I love you!"
She knelt at his feet.
"Great Peter," said Cat.
"Great P u s s y," said Pete.
This paper turned out pretty sweet!!

I always thought Catherine the Great was the one who died while screwing a horse.

Apparently it's not true. :(

everyone in Russia hate Catherine.
She sold Alaska state to Americans for almost nothing

EcSTSatic

Catherine died about a hundred years before Alaska was purchased from Russia. Even if she did try to make it with a horse, I doubt they hate her for selling the Alaskan territory.:)
Alaska celebrates Seward's Day - go figure.
