Leave it in or take it out? I have taken them out on both my '05 and '06 chevy trucks with goos results, but I am a little concerned what it might do to my '02 sts.

For maximum performance and fuel efficiency leave the screen in.
If it is dirty, clean it, but don't remove it. GM engineers have it in there for a good reason.
:) :)

the screen is there to brake up the air coming in so it will go across the heating eliment to messure air if you take it out you can cause a lean condition

:yeah: It is not a screen. It is an air flow straightener. It is not in the least bit restrictive and removing it will do more harm than good. It is less restrictive than the air filter up stream of it. You wouldn't remove that, would you?

:tisk: The screen, the horseshoe-shaped resonator box, the filter box, and the U-shaped air inlet tube are all designed to provide a pulse free, smooth air stream over the intake sensors and to the throttle body butterfly. Mess with the bull and get the horns...........

The resonator plenum serves no purpose air-flow wise. It is only there to quite induction noise, and inhibit access to the transmission dipstick.:annoyed:

Exactly the reason I removed mine. I burned my arm one too many times with the thing on there.

Everything's been said. Don't take it out.

Me too...I was also tired of having to unbolt it from the air-box whenever I wanted to change the filter.

Trust me when I say leave it in. I have seen first hand at our dyno that it hurts horsepower when you remove it. As far as options go, the northstar uses the same mass air sensor as the LS1 cars. I am using a Granateli mass air in my car and with back to back tests at our local race track have picked up .2 seconds in the 1/4 with it. Jet also makes a perfomance unit specific to the Northstar motor. If you are going to try it out be sure you get the right mass air. Some have the IAT in the sensor (01-up), early cars (97-00) are separate.

Interesting. I always wondered about those. So they do work. I imagine you'd get the most benefit from an aftermarket CAI with a performance MAF? What part number did you use and would it be the same for the 01 DTS

I used the one for an 01-04 Vette equipped with a cold air intake. I would use the same one for your 01 DTS.

Thanks, so that would be one of these

What's the cold air tuning option? Do you know? Or is that what you're talking about when you say 'with a CAI'

If your car is equipped with a cold air intake you will need this option with an aftermarket mass air. If you dont get it the idle will hunt like crazy and have a nasty off idle stumble as well. I plan on routing my filter out of the engine compartment so I went for that option.
