95 SLS
116k miles

radiator sprung a leak so replacing with new ready-rad

would it be wise to replace the original water pump now? or just leave it alone since no leaks and no noise.

After how many miles/years is water pump typically due for replacement?

I'll probably own this car for years, so replacing now would be prevent maintenance

Thanks in advance

Bob,

Mine lasted less than 50K, and by the way, for a guy (myself) who's always owned foreign cars and never replaced one before 100K you could imagine the choice words I had about Cadillac.

That said, personally, if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Good luck,
Rick

replaced mine at about 75k, if it hasn't been replaced before you're living on borrowed time...

I was told be others on this board that if it's not broken, don't fix it. Our first Cadillac didn't have its water pump go out and fail until 200K miles.

I agree. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. My '92 Deville (4.9) had 125K on it when I traded it and the water pump was original. Likewise on my '97 Deville (Northstar) with 107K.

I Third that agreement if it ain't broke don't fix it. I brought my 95 at 100k. Now have about 160k never changed anything to the coolant system but the coolant and it still runs strong and heats up fine.

There is an additive that you can get form most parts stores which contains an oil that is good for the pump bearings and seals. I used it in mine and I could tell a difference in the feel of the antifreeze. If you are worried about it you can try some of that stuff. Im not sure if the one in my car has ever been replaced, but its my understanding that if it goes bad only the dealership can replace it, so if mine goes bad before I sell it this car is goin off a cliff. Unless someone here knows where I can get the tool to remove it.

Not true. It is one of the easiest water pumps you'll ever replace, but it does take a special socket that looks like this (home made) http://www.geocities.com/grandolfo. Autozone rents them, so I am told. Several online parts stores sell cheaper Lysle versions of them, though some have said that they don't work as well. Supposedly slip if the pump is corroded in place (more likely on a green coolant vehicle). Good machined one like mine are available at a higher cost from SnapOn & Kentmore.

Last time I was in a pep boys it was about $30 bucks for one. Pretty cheap as far as specialty tools go.

I just so happen to have a snap-on tools catalog.... ill have to look in there and see if I can find it.

I still have the Snap-on page that I took the basic dimensions off of. Stock number is S6192A. It listed for $75 a few years ago.
