: Which Coupe Deville---1973 or 1974?

I've found two Coupe Devilles. One is a 1973 and the other is a 1974. I really prefer the looks of the '73, but I was wondering which is the better car? Are they just different cosmetically? The '73 is $800 and needs some work. The '74 is $1500 OBO. Both cars have a 472. With the work the '73 needs, I'll end up having the same money in either car. Any suggestions?

Honestly, it comes down to your preferences on looks, if the money you spend would be equal on both. I prefer the looks of the '74, but if you like the '73 and you're willing to do the work on it, then go for it and don't look back. Both are great classic Cadillacs, and with the engine and tranny being the same, looks are really the only distinguishing characteristic.

Avoid any 74 like the plague. They had the worst emissions controls of any year of any car. The new, stricter emissions regs went into force for 74 model year, the catalytic muffler became available in 1975. You do the math.

I like the 73 more. It's got better styling IMO and the 472 in that one is a little bit more powerful.

The '73 is my preference based strictly on looks. One question I have is that the '73 has a front bench seat. It isn't split 50/50 or 60/40. It is a one seat all the way across.

Again, thanks for the replies.

Split front seats were available at extra cost for the deVilles beginning with the '69 model year.

It's gonna be a tough decision. I like the side profile of the '74 better, but I like the front and rear of the '73 better. I guess it's gonna be a tough decision.

That is exactly what I was going to say. The fuel mileage and performance is better on the '73 compared to the '74. As you said, it had to be tuned to pass emissions, but didn't have a catalytic converter yet. The result was a drop of about 2 second from 0-60 (for a Fleetwood Brougham) and about 1 second in the 1/4 mile.

There are also no plastic rear extensions on the '73, so you don't have to worry about them cracking or breaking. And the '74s were known to rust in rear sail panel (I've heard the metal was thinner there compared to the '73).

That blue '74 in the photo does look very nice, but I would pick a '73.
