Is it possible to find out from the vin if a car is equiped with AWD? Especially in my case the SRX?

Thanks, King

On most truck bodies you can tell by the VIN, but not on SRX.
I think they are all EE if I remember right.
You have to turn the wheel and look to see if there is a halfshaft or open the hood and look.
I raise them up and look from underneath ;)

Precisely. There was already a thread about this. Unlike a lot of GM trucks and SUV's, there is no identifier in the vin as to RWD or AWD, as it's simply treated as a small option like traction control or the like. All show up as RWD on a vin report.

I read somewhere, probably here, that the AWD SRX units will start getting a SRX4 badge like the STS4.

That is true for 2007 - AWD marked as SRX 4. I added a "4" to my 2006 SRX.

For amateurs like me you can also determine whether its an AWD by comparing the passenger side leg room. The AWD transmission takes up more space on the bottom right side of the center console, pushing the legroom further to right.

As always this is the right place to come for answers........not the one that I wanted to hear but answers never the less.........thanks all. I was trying to find out if I could tell from the vin when looking online such as ebay and cars.com etc.

I have seen some with the 4 badge like the sts4 and when I get mine I will do that as it looks very cool.

Where did you get the 4 to match ,the dealer?

Frankly I wish it was easier. It's been a long time since I wasn't able to ascertain most of what I needed to know from the VIN and it boggled my mind that they didn't give AWD a distinction.

The dealer (any GM dealer) or any body shop can get you one - it is just "chrome" plated plastic w/ adhesive on the back.

Be sure to clean the area well, removing all existing wax, before applying. I used masking tape to line up the placement before actually applying. I ran a strip along the top and bottom of the existing "SRX" badge to make sure I was lined up correctly and it ( the "4") was applied straight.

Funny.....I spent loads of time removing all the badges and molding from from my Tahoe for a cleaner look, yet I add to badges to this one......fortunately, wife is amused by it all....

It is definately difficult to be sure an SRX is either RWD or AWD, for sure, from a lot of common things like online ads, Ebay, etc. when the sellers aren't completely clear about it. New one's do have the 4 after SRX, but even emblems still aren't always a surefire way to be certain.

Sure, If you can tell me how. I have a Verizon pocket PC that I can take pictures with and email and access the internet. I know how to email pictures - but how do I get the photo into this forum? Sorry, I am just catching up with technology.

ALSO, it is presently VERY cold here in MI and I would be embarassed to post without washing it first - so once I know how to do it, it may still not occur until later this week when I can run through a wash without causing the car to freeze. It does look good though. It actually helps to balance out the "SRX" badge with the left side Northstar badge. With the "4", they are now both about the same length.

Also, If you PM me or post your email, I can get a photo directly to you.

Store a small (40-50KB 3" x 5" or 2" x 3") .jpg version of your picture on your PC. When you post a message, go to the bottom of the screen and hit manage attachements. Follow the directions and the pic should appear.

Most of the picture software packages have a feature to select and delete selections or repeatedly copy / paste a section of the picture over the number. The packages also allow you to set the size and quality of the output pic.

I use a free one called Irfanview.
It has many cool features and did I mention it is free?

AWD Discovery - Thanks to this forum I learned today that the 2004 SRX RWD V8 I bought a month ago is actually AWD.

The VIN CODE Situation must have confused the guys at Carmax! This site and info are great! Thanks

That is great news (assuming you want AWD)! Only reason you may not want it is weight/gas mileage.

Been using my AWD on a little ice/snow lately and it is great.

Yes I wanted AWD - I was actually dissapointed to grab the RWD. I didn't even think to check it out before now - I have been that busy!

The SRX was just too good to pass on - it had everything we were looking for after having test drove one a couple of years ago - Black, N*, Ultraview, etc. Now I am feeling embarrassed that I didn't catch it on a test drive - but these days I don't even pretend to know what's going on under the hood anymore, so why look.

The AWD explains why it has been handling so good in the slippery FL rain we have had lately, and why I didn't spin the wheels getting out of an unpaved section of our churches parking lot this Sunday!

Well... next time try switching "traction control" off... a little black button by the gear selector... but be careful, believe me they'll spin.

So this explains a lot...

I've been shopping to maybe move up from my 04 SRX. But I've been baffled as to how some Caddy dealers can end up with a dozen SRX's -- all of them RWD. I now suspect that they're just running the VIN to build their description (for online descriptions) and its showing up as RWD.

If you search dealer inventory using GMBuypower, the summary specifies the color, interior color, engine, and transmission (RWD or AWD) of each car.

Here's a pic from a 2007 sitting on the showroom floor.

OK, this is kinda strange. But that photo shows the "4" slightly lower than the "x" in the SRX badge. The ones I have seen (including a client's 2007 SRX 4 in my lot right now) have the "4" centered height wise so it is basically even with the SRX badge. Therefore, that is how I placed mine on my 2006.

HOWEVER, just because I was curious, I also called over to the caddy dealership and had a friend take a look at one on the lot and he claims it looks just like the photo (a little lower than the SRX badge). I have no idea what is going on unless they decided to change the position of the "4" at some point in early production. REGARDLESS - TRUST me , it looks better the way I placed mine - in line w/ the SRX badge versus slightly below it. I don't like how it looks in that photo.

Anybody know how they place the "4" on the STS-4? I have seen many, but never was focused on that.

My son-in-law's comment re his dad's Dodge (http://www.cadillacforums.com/forums/#) ? He recently noticed it said DOGDE on the passenger side.

I don't think that is the answer - sorry.

They seem to be deliberately placed EITHER centered or slightly lower on all I am now obsessed to inspect when I see one. I am convinced it was a deliberate change - I also believe the "newest" way is slightly lower - which I don't like.

According to the exterior emblem and nameplate engineer, that is the intended location for the "4"
