View Full Version : Major Issues for the Caddy misfit6794 01-09-07, 10:54 PM Was driving on the highway and the coolant temp starting soaring from 210- 250, the car wouldnt let me turn on the heat, so slowed down as soon as i could but the temp got to 265. Right before i could turn off the car the check engine light came on and the car told me there was no oil in the engine whatsoever. There was coolant coming out the overflow but i couldnt find any oil leak, or smoke. absolutely terrible. Im assuming the headgasket, and $3,500? Year? Model?
Did you in fact check the oil level? Was it normal looking or like a milkshake? misfit6794 01-10-07, 10:29 AM 96 Deville, only 82,000 miles. I had been checking the oil everyday, because i thought the head gasket was going, since it was drinking coolant by the gallon. After i shut the engine off i checked the oil and it wasn't milky, but there was also barely any oil to check. '96 is a Northstar right? It won't tell that there is NO oil. It will tell you to check the oil level when you are 2 qts. low. At that point the level is just about off the dipstick. You still have 5 1/2 qts. left
The overheating and coolant consumption are not good signs though. misfit6794 01-10-07, 12:06 PM Yea, the computer told me 0% oil life left, and the dip stick was pretty dry, but it would make sense thats there still oil in it. It didn't seize and was running fine when i shut if off. Waiting to hear back from the mechanic, hopefully its not a death sentence for the caddy, i love this car. The 0% message is just a reminder to change the oil. It has nothing to do with how much oil is in the car. As far as the head gasket, it sounds shot. Pull the plugs and check for extreme build-up on the ends. This will show that coolant is being burned with the fuel. misfit6794 01-10-07, 01:28 PM Blown head gasket at 82,000 miles. What are my options? Unfortunately, none. It will have to be rebuilt. codewize 01-10-07, 03:38 PM Please don't tell me that you were using the oil life indicator to check the oil? You were pulling the dip stick, right? When the low oil waring comes on it's still safe to drive. The system is designed that way.
As previously stated the warning should come on when you're down 2 quarts which is the bottom of the stick. misfit6794 01-10-07, 04:31 PM No, definetly was not. I had been checking the dipstick, because i thought the head gasket was going and wanted to see if the oil was milky. Blown head gasket at 82,000 miles. What are my options?
Replace the engine or have the block Timeserted & the gaskets replaced. misfit6794 01-10-07, 11:50 PM I was quoted for 2,500 for a very good mechanic who is familiar (surprise) with northstars. I've read that the head bolts back out? anyone familiar with this? Cad tech 01-11-07, 01:38 PM yes the head bolts pull out the threads in the block....they need time serts as Ranger said, These are metal, you drill out block holes, tap then install sert, let sit overnight then reassemble, make sure that they warrenty repair most places dont....MAKE sure he has kit it is Kent-moore kit have him show it to you first.... I have seen others not use this kit and I have had to put the oversized in to complete repair...decent price though should be average. misfit6794 01-11-07, 01:47 PM OK, he's going to do that head gasket, with the timeserts, it is the correct kit, he does the engines all the time, and itll come with a warranty. I noticec the motor mounts in the top of the engine have alot of play, he' is going to replace them. Any suggestions on where to get them? I can only find the right, not the left | |
