So since we really havent gotten any snow here in the northwest Iv'e been delaying purchasing a set of replacement tires for my CTS. Im going to purchase a set of rims for the car and get summer-only tires so i was wondering if anyone had any input regarding what type and what would be the best size tire to put on a base package (16' Rim) CTS. ive gone from costco to autorack and im getting either a 225/55 or a 225/45 from the pages. any input would be great.

Actually the narrower the tread the better for snow traction. The wide tires act like snow shoes and ride on top of the snow.:)

I'm riding on the Pirelli SnowSports..2nd season. I like them and would buy them again. I have the Pirelli P Zero for summer tires.

When it says "All Season" it's a compromise tire trying to do both jobs. Only fair at each job. Not a good choice Woody

the reviews on tirerack don look as good ans the Alpins. the reason im going to costco is that not only do they have the lowest prices but their warranty program on tires is unbeatable!! look at their page.

^^I know...but I've driven through every winter in Illinois with crappy all season tires on all of my other cars and I've been just fine. So I'd be happy with these so I don't have to have an entire extra set sitting around or having to pay all that extra money. :-) Not to mention that you'd have to get your tires balanced and aligned twice a year. (<<<That's correct, right?) And THAT's a lot of money also.

Oh, and Northern CA and the mountains get lots of snow and ice also, so it depends on where you're at or where you go.

In Ca w/mudslides you need big cog mud tires! Y U movin' back? CA is great but pricey.

Because today it was a high of 80...in the middle of winter...and a low of 32...that's retarded. Also, how can you celebrate XMas when people are laying out at the pool getting a tan? It's just not right! Plus there's nothing but shrubs and sand out here! IL has TREES and GRASS!

Prices are WAY higher here. You can't find a decent home under $500,000 around here and in IL that's a MANSION! Average homes back in IL are between $150,000 and $250,000. AND they have a yard, a basement, and more property.

Plus all of my friends and family are in IL and I'm just out here for the Marine Corps. :-)

Yeah, snow tires are like an insurance policy. You just never know when you're gonna wake up to several inches of snow. My '04 has the snow mode and stabiltrak and with the 4 Pirelli SnowSports saved my bacon a couple of times. In a ditch is freezing weather sucks!!

Funny you should say that - Chicago's headed into a "full-week of snow on the ground" for the second time this winter, and it's going to be icy... Maaaaaybe I should consider switching the tires, now... :-)

what do u guys think? i spoke to the mechanic at costco and he told me they'd replace the summer tires with the winters and back as long as i have the receipt for the winters.
