View Full Version : Keyboard by BMW gothicaleigh 01-07-07, 02:15 PM I just ordered myself a new keyboard. My current one is a Frankenstein's monster from many repairs and swapping lesser used keys for damaged/worn popular ones.
Mainly I wanted a board that wouldn't be an eyesore on my desk, yet wasn't cluttered with a million useless functions or looked like a ricer's wet dream.
What I settled upon, oddly enough, was a keyboard designed by BMW:

There, I got that one out of the way for you. :p slk230mb 01-07-07, 02:21 PM Looks nice, but I don't think I can go back to a wired keyboard after using a wireless one for 2+ years. Vesicant 01-07-07, 02:23 PM <enter snide comment about iDrive>

LOL Well you're lucky it doesnt have the giant iDrive controller grafted onto the side of the keyboard. Looks good though

They make a wireless one too. :D

Probably would have went that route, but it comes in a set. I like the mouse I have and really have no need for a wireless keyboard (I prefer my mouse to be wireless, but don't move my keyboard enough to have a preference). Damn I don't know why but when I first read this I was thinking a musical keyboard :) ChicagoCTS32 01-07-07, 02:55 PM I was thinking it was going to be a musical one too...
I want this one:

Those are admittedly beautiful (I was drooling over the DiNovo earlier today before I saw the price), but I would find it hard to justify spending almost $200 on a keyboard. Mine's $30. Red_October_7000 01-07-07, 05:06 PM IBM Model M all the way baby.
What the hell is the purpose of cordlessness on a device that never moves from its spot? One more battery to change/charge -just what I needed. Besides, I'm a gamer. Response time matters; as does key feel. Those crappy modern ones just don't have the feel that the old Model M does. Wiseguy2 01-07-07, 06:34 PM Wow!
BMW Actually designed something attractive for a change. And all this time I thought all was lost (I will say that I do like the new 3 series coupe tho..) codewize 01-07-07, 07:23 PM I hate to ruin anyones day but this is the only keyboard to own.

Wow... that thing is amazing. DiNovo out... optimus 103 in. Says it should be available later this year! Red_October_7000 01-07-07, 11:28 PM It's said that since last year. That's gotta be the biggest piece of vaporware since any Disk Drive from Nintendo for the US market... Very cool how it levitates like that... :) DBA-One 01-08-07, 09:39 AM The best keyboard ever made is the IBM tactile keyboard. You know, the "clicky" one. You can't wear them our, they are easy to clean because the caps can be removed, etc. They rule. The only reason I'm not using mine now is because my laptop doesn't have a PS2 port and I haven't gotten around to buying an adapter. railven 01-08-07, 10:35 AM It's said that since last year. HAHA so true, and the way you stated it - delicious!
If the DiNovo's touch sensitive buttons are anything like those on the Logitech Z-10 forget it! While trying to find a happy set of speakers I tried the Z-10's [Logitech purely dropped the ball on those nothing but $150 worth of gargage] and I found myself having to press hard on the "touch sensitive" controls and in other instances having to press the surface repeatedly. ShadowLvr400 01-08-07, 10:45 AM I have a wireless mouse and keyboard from Logitech myself. The reason? my desk chair is a recliner. :) I have the kb in my lap, and mouse on the arm rest. railven 01-08-07, 10:52 AM I have the Logitech MX5000. My girlfriend got it for me as a Christmas gift last year.
I've come to appreciate and love wireless when I'd move my computer from place to place. It being built as an HTPC and and having to move zero wires is just so easy!
As a gamer [FPS/MMORPGS/RPGS/RACERS] I've had zero problems with my Bluetooth keyboard after I moved the reciever a bit higher [using a Logitech USB extension cable I bought off E-Bay] from just behind my PC. That's a Model M. The are the best keyboards in the world. Model M's from the 1980s are still in service while the computers and display monitors they came with have been relegated the back room if not thrown out altogether. This is not for no reason. Likewise the Model M is still in production! DBA-One 01-08-07, 01:52 PM I used to buy them low and sell on EBay high. A guy I work with will basically pay anything I ask. I've seen version in black on EBay but the price was crazy. That is the Holy Grail of all keyboards - the black M. I've never seen one in person and I've even seen some "M's" that were, infact, not clicky. I'd suspect it was not a "clicky" unless I touched it personally (the black version). gothicaleigh 01-08-07, 02:15 PM I used to buy them low and sell on EBay high. You have to be kidding me.
Here's the keyboard I'm replacing:

That is why they are loved. They are pefect if you are a "lap typer" as well. They are heavy and have a nice feel for those of us that like to use keyboard over a mouse. codewize 01-08-07, 10:27 PM I agree, those are excellent and indestructible. I hated to give mine up.

gothicaleigh; That's what I currently use and I love them. Red_October_7000 01-09-07, 12:15 AM http://www.clickykeyboards.com/index.cfm
for all your hideously overpriced Model M needs. Perfectly servicable ones are discarded all the time. That's how I got mine. They are still made new, though, so no worries. I just like the classic "IBM" design over the newer ones, although there is no functional difference. codewize 01-09-07, 12:37 AM The one I use now isn't a cliky one it's the KB9910 P/N 09N5545 Benzilla 01-09-07, 02:43 AM Just.... wow.
You guys are geeks, this whole thing was Greek to me.
All I need is a somewhat flat surface in which I can mostly make out letters and numbers.
Right now I'm on a laptop, so it sorta comes with it... davesdeville 01-09-07, 04:51 AM I like the look of this one a lot:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16823201015
Plus it's really cheap (I can't see myself justifying more than about $25 for a keyboard,) so when my best buy special takes a crap I will be getting that one. DBA-One 01-09-07, 09:31 AM Just.... wow.

Maybe but like a mechanic needs good tools, IT people need good equipment. I personally try to never use my laptop keyboard or pointing device. My hands swaet a lot and I like to keep my computer clean so I always use external keyboards and mice. HITMONEY 01-09-07, 03:40 PM I want the Optimus Keyboard if it ever gets released....

Dude! You read my mind too.
I want this one but I don't think I'll be able to come up with the scratch for it.. :crying2:

http://hammondorganco.com/portableB3.htm Red_October_7000 01-09-07, 11:44 PM Well I'd go for a classic tone generator organ over those digital jobbers any day. They can say they faithfully reproduce the sound 'till they're blue in the face; I've played both (I used to own a Tonewheel Hammond when I played the organ) and there IS a difference.
Give me an X-66 or a B-3 any day of the week... Well I'd go for a classic tone generator organ over those digital jobbers any day. Give me an X-66 or a B-3 any day of the week...Oh, I agree with you regarding the earlier wannabies, but listening to the new version demos it's hard to tell. I'd have to give 'em a try to hear for sure. For now I'd be happy to find someone who can repair my old portabalized B-3, I miss my old screamer! My C-3 doesn't have the guts the other one has.
Check out the demos.. (http://hammondorganco.com/B3video.htm) Red_October_7000 01-10-07, 12:01 AM Ah, but for the price of a Hammond B-3, why on earth would anyone spend as much as a small car on an immitation, regardless of how good it sounds? Ah, but for the price of a Hammond B-3, why on earth would anyone spend as much as a small car on an immitation, regardless of how good it sounds?Well, when you've lugged the beast (which feels like it weighs the same as a small car! well, only about 425 lbs) The thought of a portable version that weighs less than half and sounds pretty much the same starts to sound pretty good!
My custom B-3 only weighs around 200 lbs, but it's getting harder to find anyone who can repair her since the guy who customized it is now dead. I think one of the components in the pre-amp is fried. I also should get my woofer in the Leslie re-coned. Ah well, it's only time, money and the search for intelligent technicians! :hijacked: !!!
Sorry :gothicaleigh:
:p gothicaleigh 01-26-07, 12:08 PM Well, Newegg can't seem to withdraw funds from my PayPal account (despite there being over $1k in there each time I've tried and the fact that I use it with no problem to conduct business daily). So I've said "F it!" and reordered using plastic.
Oddly enough, this proved lucky for me because now they are on sale for $4.99!
I ordered three. :D
Just thought I would update seeing as this is a great deal.
