Whatzzzup Cadillac catz, I'm new to the forum and I just purchased a 92 Cadillac Sedan Deville at a auction about a week ago. When I first drove the vehicle I felt a vibration under my left foot towards the front wheel. I took it in to the dealership to get it checked out and they told me my catalytic converter was loose and the transmission mount and front right motor mount needed to be replaced. Well, I decided to go elsewhere to get it fixed because they wanted to charge me $1250 for the catalytic converter replacement and $720 for the motor mounts. I purchased the parts and had them installed. I also replaced the spark plugs and wires, rotor wheel, distributor, transmission serviced and replaced the filter. After all those necessary replacements I'm still getting that vibration. I started to think that I needed to balance my wheels, but normally when that happens the steering wheel vibrates rapidly also,..... right? It does vibrate a liiiiitle, but not enough that I'm normally used to when in other cars with wheel balancing problems. Basically, I was hoping someone out there had a similar problem and had it fixed. Any suggestions Caddy catz? Holla back and good lookin'

Doob, first off, I'm sorry you replaced all that stuff, unless it actually needed to be replaced. I'm glad you didn't drop $720 for a converter, or $1250 for the mounts. Holy cow, that is highway robbery. And both jobs are fairly easy to do yourself, in an afternoon.

An imbalanced wheel will present itself in varying degrees, depending on how badly it's imbalanced, from a slight shimmy that presents itself at a particular speed (usually freeway) to an awful, full on shake, that makes you grip the steering wheel tightly and wonder if a horrible, firey death is a mere tenth of a mile away.

Whenever presented with issues such as these, it's best to start simple. Use the KISS principal. The KISS principal has nothing to do with Detroit Rock City, long tongues, or high heeled spiked shoes. KISS is an acronym standing for Keep It Simple Stupid. In other words, the most probable explanation for any issue is usually the most obvious or simple. Then again, we are talking about Cadilllac's. So who's to say?

At any rate, I'd check the wheel balance first. I'd also give a good eye to that driver's side tire to see if there is any uneven tread wear. You may find there is. But even if you can't see uneven wear, you'll feel it. Take the car in to a reliable, honest shop. Watch them balance your tires, and drive it. I'd also have them rotate the wheels, front to back. This should cure your problem. Or at worst, move the vibration to the rear of the car.

If the problem moves out back, you either have a tire that is bad, or you have a bent rim.

I've had a similar problem w/ my 91' Brougham. I've replaced all the tires and have had the car in the shop at least 5x's in a 6wk period for re-balancing, but I still have a vibration from 47 to 53 mph that I can't seem to get resolved. The guys at the tire shop ain't gotta clue and neither do I. The rims aren't bent, but I was looking at the technical service bulletins on ALLDATA, and there is mention that if your wheels aren't torqued to the recommended specifications, rotor distortion can cause wheel vibrations. I'm going to replace my rotors pretty soon and see if that rectifies the problem.
