I've been doing a lot of reading regarding trying to get XM into our CTS. In the middle of all this I've found out about the CD (03') vs DVD Navigation. I'm curious what all are the advantages of upgrading the navigation in our CTS to the DVD one? Is the map data easier to find or something?

Its all in one disk and you can play dvd movies. For the CD one you need multiple CD maps and no movies allowed

If you've already got a CD-Nav, It's not worth the upgrade. It may be a hassle to change CD's when you cross area's (multiple states), but other than that, they're almost identical. I did notice when I upgraded from CD to DVD Nav, that the DVD Nav was about twice as fast in recalculating routes etc. The DVD Nav's will also have the XM menu's, the CD version won't.

If you do ever upgrade, swap the faceplates (I did). I'm pretty sure all CD Navs are pewter face, and all DVD Navs are black. I upgraded due to a jammed 6 disk changer.

I agree. I have a CD based Nav, and I'm quite pleased. being able to watch DVDs in the car would have been nice, but it's gravy.

However if you can find a TV tuner ( a Europe only option I believe) you can have AV inputs and use an external/portable DVD player and a TV.

If you find a european TV tuner it aint going to work in the U.S. because most of Europe is PAL format and the U.S. is NTSC. On top of that the european standard is a yellowish white rather than a bright blue-white screen and it looks like hell to most Americans.

odysseus, any pictures? I'm curious to see the faceplate swap you spoke of.

I basically put swapped the original pewter faceplate from the CD Nav onto the DVD Nav. They're identical, except for the color. Basically, it looks completely like a stock Pewter face CD Nav, and it says CDROM, even though it's a DVD Nav.

ok. That makes sense. I'm still on the fense about upgrading to the DVD nav. The main points right now being...

Faster calc. on routes
One disk instead of multiple
Newer maps
Can play DVD's for daughter

Is there anything I'm missing?

They also have the XM menu's built in, so if you ever add an XM tuner, it will work. It won't work with the CD based unit (built before XM was an option).

Odysseus....I emailed elliottrent regarding a nav unit for my 06 CTS today.
I hope to hear from him. I was having second thoughts about buying one
from carparts.com...but all the posts seem to indicate his units are ready to
go once installed...
