: V1 mounted in the V!

Here are some pics of the mounting method I decided on for the V1 (Valentine radar detector).

Of course I had to mod it!

I like it.

I'll tell you, I've come to conclude that my detector is giving me a false sense of security.

I was on the highway early monday morning, crested a hill and saw a trooper parked at the bottom no more than 200 yrds away. I was in the fast lane passing a car in the slow lane. We were both over the speed limit.

My detector had not made a peep.

We both slowed as we went by the trooper. Since my detector was silent I figured he was just catching some Z's.

I look in my rear view and I see his flashers come on. I'm thinking "crap, he got me". Still nothing out of the detector.

He ends up pulling over the poor sap I was passing. I bet that guy was pissed.

I assume he was using LIDAR/LASER.

Moral of the long winded story: If he doesn't point his LIDAR/LASER gun directly at you, you'll never know he's there. If he does, all your detector is telling you is that you're fixing to get a ticket.

... all your detector is telling you is that you're fixing to get a ticket. That's scary. I was thinking seriously of getting a V1 here coming up ... geez, should I?

Man, insult me then ask for a favor. :thepan:

Must be a V owner!:histeric:

You will have to attack it with a Dremel to make it fit, but I thought it was worth it.

Maybe he didn't use anything and just decided to stop someone.

I chose to go a little higher up the windshield so as to "hide" it from exterior view... no one can see it through the factory "black dot" tint...

Ain't NOTHING like a V1... :thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup:

heavy, I have mine mounted similarly except about 1.5" higher.

If you get it high enough, with the rear facing antenae just to the right of the dimmer control switch section of the mirror, then the dimmer switch section blocks the display from the rear view but the driver can still see it.

Unless you are using the hidden display unit, this is the best way to mount it, IMO.

Do you still get accurate readings?? The V1 manual states that you should install just below windshield tint, otherwise the V1 unit may not catch all the signals...

That is why I mounted it like I have it.

Above the mirror it didn't have a "clear shot" through either window.

This is definitely true for me. Of the >30 speeding tickets for which I've been convicted, way over half have been with a radar detector. I don't even use one anymore.

I still pick up radar with uncanny range... I haven't noticed any decline in performance... but then again... I haven't truely tested it...

Next time I find a stationary radar sign, I'll do some placement tests... see where it get's the best range...

Lidar is becoming very popular. You might want to invest in a lidar jammar. City cops have been using it and the CHP has it. Lidar is only used in stationary mode so it has its limitations. Odometer pace is what you need to worry about. Keep one eye on the road and one in your rear view!

here is a pic of my 'older' valentine hardwired just through the front of the dash onto a 12v source..nothing fancy but gets the job done

Hey NXLR8, doesn't mounting above the rear view mirror hamper the rearward field of vision (it's it blocked)?

I have mine mounted to the windshiled just under the rearview mirror for total front to back vision. You may want to look into this.

I had mine hard-wired so there is a thin black phone cord coming from the headliner, down through the rearview mirror mount and well hidden. Thing also turns off when the key is off....not something it use to do when plugged into the cig. lighter. Once I had a dead battery after leaving the car in the garage for a week.

As I said before, I haven't "tested" this before... but I have not noticed ANY decrease in performance due to this mounting location. I get rearward radar signals just as strong as forward...

Come summer, I'll test all these theories out when I seek out a stationary radar sign and just play around with it for a while... unless someone in the Aurora area knows someone with a radar gun that would be willing to help me "test"...

As for the direct wire... I followed the FAQ, with a slight mod... Mines wired in to the sunroof... the only thing I did differently is I have the "V1 Acessories box" stuffed up in the headliner for the optional remote mount. Just haven't gotten around to setting it, but the "plug in spot" is ready to go...
Mine is on the RAP (http://www.cadillacfaq.com/faq/answers/sm/rap.jpg). So, as soon as I open the door, or click the remote, the V1 turns on. Once I exit the car, the V1 will remain on for 10 minutes, then power is terminated. Never had a problem... and I only have about 2" of cord showing. VERY clean IMHO.

So.. finally 3 months later...

I ran up on a stationary speed sign with both my V1's in the car... mine mounted in the pictured location (up, up, and away) over the rearview... my wife's mounted dead center in the windshield...

Headon to sign: (Radar pointed AT my car)
Both signaled EXACLY the same time and with the EXACT same signal strenght... literally, it was like they were going off in stereo... :)

Driving up to sign from behind (Radar pointed in same direction I was driving, but not AT me):
Center mounted V1 went off about 2 seconds earlier... but, like I said, the radar was NOT pointed at my vehicle, so there was NO threat to me... the 2 seconds would NOT have "saved" me, as I still had a good 45 seconds of warning until I actually passed the sign (which wasn't clocking me anyway...)

Driving AWAY from the sign (sign pointing at the back of my car):
Both units read the same readings in strength until the VERY VERY end of the signal... meaning... I was almost a full mile PAST the threat when the top one stopped and the bottom one still had 1 LED for about another 5 seconds... again... NOT a threat at this point, so who cares....

Hopefully this takes care of any worries about where to put the V1... it does JUST PEACHY up on top of the Rearview...

Yeah... I have the concealed display, just need to find the time to install it.. but the plan is to do it just like that...

The actual detector STILL needs to be mounted and I simply can't stand to have it in my field of view... plus, I don't like people outside the car to see it... it's practically invisible behind the factory tint at the top of the windshield...
