This is the first really cold season I've had the DTS. When it's cold out say below 30, and I start the card there a very high pitch whine from the driver side front. Sounds exactly like a super charger. Then it goes away as soon as the car warms up a little.
It sounds like a bearing noise, sort of, but it sounds like a bearing spinning very very fast or much faster than I would expect to hear at idle. You ever take like a small electric motor and put to much voltage to it? That's what it sounds like. Like an AFX car or something.
I'll take a close listen under the hood tomorrow morning if I remember.
Our SLS does the exact same thing. But I think there is a How To that says it is the cabin fan or something. Doesn't bother any of us because it does go away in a minute or two.
I like to think GM stuck a secret supercharger in there somewhere...
dp102288 is correct. I can tell by his reaction that he hears the same thing I do.
It sounds like a small bearing spinning very very fast, just like a small AFX car. You ever hold one of those while you gun it? That's what it sounds like. It's smooth and consistent. If it is a bearing I would expect it to be spinning at like 20,000 RPM like a Dremel Tool, yeah that's what it sounds like.
I think I am a little lost though...the sound I hear, the dremel sound, I hear from the inside of the car. Yours is from the hood area?
Let me clarify...from the inside I get the dremel, from the engine area I get the whining/supercharger sound. Dremel is only in very cold, supercharger is 97% of the time, any weather.
Sorry if I confused you. So your getting a dremel from the hood area?
No I think we're hearing the same thing. I originally heard it inside the car when I started it then got out to listen. It's on the drivers side from what I can tell but I'm sure we're hearing the same thing.
I get the hydraulic whining noise in the very very cold, but I'm thinking it's coming from the water pump since it's loudest in that area. I've never heard the noise you two are talking about though.
