: Can amp RMS power exceed speaker RMS rating safely?

12-07-06, 08:55 PM
i found an amp that puts out 125W rms @ 2ohms. the kappa 5.25 max rms rating is 55W and the 6x9 max rms is 110W. will the amp blow these speakers? should i get a smaller amp?

12-07-06, 08:58 PM
YES lol

12-07-06, 09:01 PM
yes i should get a smaller amp or yes it will work? what if the gain is turned down?

12-07-06, 09:12 PM
doesnt matter
gain adj vol not the power wattage
get a smaller amp or better speaks

WTF??? Man your killing me here, I know you don't like ca.com but you need to read more.

Gain has nothing to do with volume. If you set your gains low....say around 11volts for your front speaks (sqrt of wanted watts x ohms)they will be fine.

Wow...I wouldn't even want to try amps & speakers with such different max ratings.

12-08-06, 08:02 AM
My amps are "over-rated" for my speakers. My subs are 750 rms and I am putting around 1300rms to them, my speakers are 100rms and bridged, according to paper, they should see 150 but they only see around 120. It's all about your gains.

I have an Orion 2150SX powering my front 4x6 Blaupunkts. I turned the gain down (waaaay down). I haven't blown my speakers yet, gain has nothing to do with volume.

12-08-06, 09:26 AM
kid why do you think you blew your infinitys...
then your eclipses....
why havent i yet?
i tried to put it in lamens terms...

12-08-06, 04:33 PM
1. I blew my Infinitys because when I had them I knew NOTHING about car audio, they ran off my HU and I cranked them, sending a clipped signal to them.

2. Never blew my Eclipses, I bought new speakers because I wanted softer tweets and louder tweets and a mid-bass with MUCH better mid-bass.

12-08-06, 04:39 PM
and those speaks can handel a PEAK power of 400+
infinity kappas 5.25 handle 150 peak i believe 55 rms
now a 125 RMS power is asking to blow them....
the end result here is buy the PROPER equipment dont half ass it or miss match it...

12-08-06, 04:43 PM
What? I ran 22 watts to them, they didn't blow because of too much power, they blow because of clipping. And at that only the 6x9s and tweets blew cuz of the clipping the 5.25s still fine.

Clipping is the #1 killer of speakers, not overpowering. He can use my 1000/1s if he has the right crossovers on his HU and set the gains low and be good.

12-08-06, 04:48 PM
no man
im talking about the guy who asked the ? not your case lol

12-08-06, 05:05 PM
I know, and I am saying, ultimately to anwser his question he could use a 1000watt amp to power them and not blow them. That amp would be fine.

12-08-06, 05:12 PM
yes he would...
gain does not affect the wattage to the speaks it affects the power....

12-08-06, 05:27 PM

Yes it does, look up the ohms law.

I'll prove it.

Your running what, 75 watts @ 4ohms per speaker for your set up? Even if your not read..

SqRoot(wattsxohms) so... 75x4 = 300, the sqroot of that is 17.3....so when you take your DMM and put it on the speaker outputs of the amp, you should read 17.3volts(AC). Now you don't wanna all that, ok. Go to JL audios website look for reccomended input sensitivity for a 300/4. They reccomend 17.3.............why? Because 17.3 volts gives 75watts @ 4ohms. Need more examples? I got this shit down to science lol.

12-08-06, 06:04 PM
man i dont wanna argue with you
you use an amp to power speaks that puts a very close rms to the speaks rms
using a higher power amp will risk blowing the speaks

12-09-06, 02:24 AM
well thanks for all the opinions guys. i just said screw it altogether and got an xbox 360 and Madden 07 :bouncy:

12-09-06, 03:13 AM
I got a barley used 360 game for sale....Saints Row...$40 shipped

12-09-06, 07:29 AM
Xbox over speakers...interesting! :hmm:

12-09-06, 11:49 AM
im gonna be putting my PS2 in my ETC in about a week lol

12-09-06, 09:24 PM
^^ Cool! Post a write-up please...would love to see that in action!

12-09-06, 10:01 PM
i did it with my old jensen screen
the thing that has me heated right now is that i cant find my power adapter...

12-10-06, 02:27 PM
Where did you put it at? I know the glovebox doesnt fit a regular ps2 without modification.

12-10-06, 07:03 PM
yup i know
it went under the passenger side seat however thats where the brain is currently for the avic-n1 so it will prob go under the drivers side seat

12-10-06, 08:42 PM
^^ Is that enough room for ventilation...my PS2 gets pretty hot, and it isn't the slim version so it does have a fan.

12-10-06, 09:54 PM
worked fine there for over 2 weeks while i had it in there with my jensen...

12-11-06, 08:03 PM
^^ Oh you already had it in your car? Well at least it still works.

But the driving while playing will be hard! :p

12-11-06, 11:30 PM
im not that stupid...
