What was wrong with the valve cover?

Hmm, could grow on me. Slap a Cadillac crest on there and you might have something.

Ranger Hmmmm Perhaps a crest with illumination. Codewize The finish was peeling in places and the plug wires have that plastic loom that the dealer put on when the fuel rail was changed I think this looks cleaner also helps keep water splash out of the spark plug wells. Thanks for the feedback. sts96

In that case it looks great. Maybe a Cadillac script emblem?

That does look good! Now you need to make a replacement for the ugly engine cover!

That does look very nice as is, but I think it would also look better with the emblem and/or "Cadillac" script. But... Ever think of diamond plate? :stirpot:

Hey I love it! With or without any logo/script! Very nice job!

If its easy to put on, I am sure you could make a good chunk of change just from this board...

Jeweling is another option.

An emblem may be too much considering there is already one on the beaty cover. Scripting however might work well.

Cadillac in cursive should be engraved on it running across it....

I like the diamond plate idea too...but smooth chrome looks very good in the pics above.

A good script would look good...would it be engraved or painted/applied on?

Hey, keep us posted too! I'd like to know if it warps or discolors with the heat under the hood. Any chances? Also, what did you use to attach it? The bolts under the beauty cover?

Thanks, some very good input I would like to try them all, but this is a junk box project so when $$ must be spent I get very slow. LOL new pics of current state of the project.now looking for metal to cover the bulk of the engine. Also this is easy to remove as it is held by the 2 front cover studs thru the sheet metal.
BTY the crest and wreath was all that was in my junk box.

So where'd you get it?

The chrome plated steel .010 is just flat stock gently bowed over the valve cover been in my junk box 14 years. the crest was from a front license plate filler from the 90s.I am now looking for a better source. hope I can get your mind working some good ideas have been posted. sts96

That looks like some nice stuff to play with. Does it corrode?

I like it. Can you give the dimensions. I have de-badged and have the crest and the Cadillac cursive from trunk. (Sorry missed the 11" x 16" in original post.)

OK went back to the mfg. co. that i got the steel from they said they had not used chromed steel in 12 years so I asked the warehouse mgr.if any was left he had 3 rolls (600 lbs.) back in one corner so I bought it all. did I make a mistake??.sts96

Guess that depends on what you paid for it. That IS a lot of chromed steel though.

That's a nice cover. A few more chrome accents on the beauty cover will blend it in well.

Thanks for all the comments. I will continue to try other placements as I now have material to work with. Will in the near future post material in the classified should you want some chromed steel to work with as I seem to have plenty. sts96

Did you take off whatever coating the factory puts on the covers and block? Mine appears to have a powder coating of some kind, not aluminum looking at all :P

Very nice, but would one of the covers of the newer Devilles/DTS fit on it:

And I wonder if having the plug wires "pinched" any closer to the block would have adverse effects on them getting hot or not.

The chrome cover on my 97 deville is only .010 between the cover and the valve cover and plug wires so they are not pinched (well only .010 more) have driven only 600 miles so don't really know if other problems will surface so far no problems. I will be testing other years and placements. I had painted my valve cover with silver paint because the powder coat is peeling the platers would not chrome plate a mag. valve cover . This is such a great engine it should look better.

Yeah I always thought they could dress it up a bit more, guess they did with later covers, espeically the RWD covers look much more sophisitcated. I didn't really notice until I looked the other day but it appears the front valve cover is colored that off gray, the back is black, and it appears much of the rest of the engine could be black, the new waterpump housing really is nice looking being shiny in color.

Great now you got me thinking of ways to dress this thing up, for now, since its cold, I'll be happy with keep the salt off.

Any tricks to get the beauty cover looking good, I think mine has been permanently tainted by the underhood cover (which I also didn't notice before but it says "Cadillac" across it.

It is, a very cool replacment. All I would add is a wreath & crest emblem.
