DS: "You're a ****ing *******. How can you consciously take hard earned money from people for a cardboard box? I hope you get what's coming to you, you disgraceful sack of shit."

Seller: "Sir, i have clearly stated what this auction is about, however, this is a test to see who actually reads descriptions for auctions, would u like me to delete ur bid? i have no problem in doing so, i would understand ur anger if i had put it in the smallest writing possible or tried to completely hide it, but i mentioned it twice in the auction and i dont understand why you be so angered. If you have any more questions or comments please message me back."

DS: "Deleting my bid is useless since some poor person already outbid me. Who are you to test people? You could be taking money from someone who could be buying this for their kid for Christmas. Come Christmas morning some heartbroken kid is going to unwrap a hollow cardboard box and look up at their father or mother with a look of disappointment. If you have anything remotely close to a heart, you'll close this listing, because you and I both know why you listed a box for sale...."

Seller: "no no, i know why i listed a box for sale, you don't , listen though, i am going to notify the this high bidder this guy in the end if he wins that he is buying a box without the system if he wins, my whole point was to see if people read auctions or not, thank you for all your input and help. if you have any questions or comments please message me again, by the way was it honestly difficult to see that it is for a box?"

DS: "If you're being so honest, why is the type that mentions it's a box only smaller in comparison to the type that doesn't? "You are bidding on a 60GB box only, system is not included." is in 10 point Arial font. Pretty small in comparison to "WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR!?! BID RIGHT NOW!NO RESERVE AUCTION!" in 24 point Arial in blue type. If you're just testing someone, can I safely assume that you will not go through with the transaction once the auction closes? Are you gonna let that poor person keep their money? I'm pretty sure you're not going to, nor am I too sure you'll notify the buyer of a thing, that's why I'm taking it upon myself to inform the person who is the current high bidder of what you're doing. It's just as fair as your auction listing right? I guess by seeing the number of bids your real intention is satisfied and you won't be needing the $710 currently being bid on your box......"

DS to High Bidder: "I can see you're new to ebay and not too familiar with scammers but please be careful. I'm sorry to tell you but you just bid $710 on a PS3 box, no game system. I've been having a messaging war with the seller and find it only fair to tell you about your mistake. I reccomend you tell him to delete your bid. My sympathy goes out to you, I hope you don't lose any money on this. Best of luck and please be careful in the future....."

What's this ? Dishonest people and scammers on the ebay ? I simply can't believe it. I am shocked.

It's good of you to attempt to warn the bidder and make sure they know what's going on, but the exchange with the seller isn't going to do much. If they know they are going in to rip people off they will have no conscious about it and only word their e-mails back to you to look as if their intention is somehow not dishonest.

People really need to start wising up and start reading things people sell on ebay....I remember when my friend purchased Mustang Cobra rims for about 900 on ebay awhile back and got toy mustang rims :histeric:

He ended up getting his money back

Damn that really sucks. I would never spend $810 for a gag gift...the seller shoudl realize that. Who ever spends that much money is assuming that the shit is real. What an ass.

Something about this is so upsetting to me....We should all bid on this and not pay the fuccker! Anyone willing to get a negative comment :)

Ill bid on it....my SN is "Way2Saucee"

Damn that sucks, but thats our world nowadays.

I hope the person who won is aware of the description because the seller is going by E-Bay rules so even E-Bay/Paypal can't do anything if the winner pays.

Sucks.

I though he stated it was an empty box quite well! If you bid on it, then you need to pay attention, cause you're a De De De!

Ebay should ban this scam artist. They are big enough that they do not need this type of buisness.

Still, he got $810 for a box and $45 for shipping. Not something I would do but he didn't exactly lie. When I buy relatively high dollar items from ebay I make sure I read the whole description, then again I read it for the low buck stuff as well. I'm not saying that whoever bought it deserved this but I'll bet they learned a valuable lesson ($855 worth) and wont do it again. With all that said: what an *******!.

Good job Dopestar, (with apologies to Metallica) and justice for all!

Well maybe we are being too negative.

For $810 plus $45 for shipping ($855) some lucky person is getting a PS3 box, a Blue-Ray movie and a TMX Elmo.

Wait...that still sucks!

Wow! I think this is a common occurance on ebay. People in their haste to win an auction don't read it fully. Hopefully the high bidder gets his/hers common sense in order before paying for it.

The seller and winning bidder are equally guilty in this manner. Anyone sleazy enough to sell this thing for $810 is a scam-artist, and anyone who would pay $810 for a box shouldn't be allowed to reproduce.

What an @$$hole. I mean obviously the people bidding have a responsibility to read carefully but this guy is just MEAN. Look at everything else he says about having to go to stores and try hard to get it etc. It's just wrong, and some people are naive/stupid enough to just bid without reading. Dope you did the right thing!!!! Good for you!!!!

I don't get it. Why is everyone pissed.?

He listed that it was only a box in big enough writting, not hidden, TWICE in his description.

I wouldn't do an auction like this, but there was no dishonesty involved there.

Old adage... "An idiot and his money are soon seperated."
It is kinda like gene pool cleansing... only with wallets. :)

Sounds simple enough for me.

Take responsibility for your own actions and don't get mad at someone who took advantage of your stupidity.

I was in ToysRUs yesterday and they had the PS3's in stock. A woman ahead of me at the checkout was buying one.

My thing is that the "empty box" line should have been the biggest print and in the title of the auction. Maybe he wasn't fully dishonest, but he did make an effort to mitigate the "empty box" clause.

As does almost every commercial on TV for medication, Car Sales, Contests... etc etc.

Read the fine print. It is there, right in front of you.

PS- The cup of coffee you get at a McDonald's window will be hot. There, I just saved you from having to read the cup on that one. You can return the favor later.

PSS- If you should recieve an erection after taking Viagra that lasts for over 4 hours.... go to the emergency room.

For me the title should have been Empty PS3 Box for sale! +DVD & TMX Elmo NOT Sony playstation 3 60 GB NEW BOX!!+++DVD AND TMX ELMO!!

To me it looks like OOOOH! PS3 For sale comes with/in the box! Time to bid to get my brother the PS3 he wants! Come a week later we open it and its empty... yeah I'd get pist. Good job Dope for tracking this guy down and telling him what's what. Many people don't read the description coz they just get greedy you could say and go for the goods to get it.

A legal Scammer??? Did ANYONE at all report this Fraker to eBay????
I don't care if you are testing for intelligence.... It should not be ALLOWED.... Ebay should pull the ad.

Maybe the buyer is gonna resell it on ebay for a profit... LOL

maybe it they are friends "selling" stuff to each other to boost feedback scores

you know, like if i lived besides you, we both had an ebay acct and you wanted somethin of mine, we could say, hey we'll make an auction of it, you can bid outrageusly on it and we leave each other feedback

That's a good idea, but eBay charges around a $25 final value fee for something like that! That's a expensive way to earn some feedback.

That guy is nothing more than a low life scam artist relying on a legal technicality.

I'd bet the buyer did not receive what he bought before he left a positive feedback. Bet that changes.

DS to winner: "Just to let you know, the ''GREAT SELLER'' you just made a transaction for $810 with just sold you an empty cardboard box. There's no PS3 in there. I suggest you demand your money back if you paid already....."

caddycruiser
12-06-06, 08:59 PM
It's dumb, but it's an interesting test that really does show how people just don't read descriptions and then bitch and moan later. If you couldn't clearly read that it's just the box (granted, it's smaller, but if you're thinking of something like that which is usually expensive, R-E-A-D).

It doesn't sound like he would legitimately steal anyone's money either, contacting the winner to make sure they knew it was just a box. At the least, a few people will get angry, but a few will also realize how stupid they are for not paying attention and reading a description, and just bidding away.

Then again, some idiots just play games with bidding on stuff with no intention whatsoever, just to screw over the seller. Not sure who has that time in a day, but it happens.

I don't think I would have complained about this though...it's more of an interesting thing to watch develop, seriously.

DS to winner: "Just to let you know, the ''GREAT SELLER'' you just made a transaction for $810 with just sold you an empty cardboard box. There's no PS3 in there. I suggest you demand your money back if you paid already....."You are wasting your time man. Some clueless bastard bought that PS3 box and thinks you are writing him all this stuff because you wanted to buy it and didn't want to get into a bidding war with him at the end. Until he recieves that empty box he probably thinks it was YOU that tried to scam him.

Anyway, I put myself in a position much like yours a few months ago. Before I bought my wife a '98 Deville, I was looking for a car for her. Spotted a '91 Mercedes 300E on ebay that had low mileage (67k) and was described as "showroom new" and "could pass as a brand new car", "impecable". Car was at a car lot within 10 miles from my house and looked good in the pics. I decided to go look at it with my wife and it was a complete POS, didn't look good from 30 feet away let alone up close. Had faded paint, patched up seats, discolored interior panels, cracked console, broken tailight, fenders/hood did not line up neither did the trunk, had loud knock when I started it then went away, etc. I didn't even bother taking it for a test drive cause I knew it needed a lot of work and was definately not as described. So I try to do the nice thing and warn the high bidder about the car and that he would be over paying and dissapointed when it arrived. The guy emails me and thanks me for the info and then says he still plans on getting the car and that I shouldn't even bother to outbid him. I email him back and wish him luck. I also inform him that he will think of me when the car arrives.
