My trunk lid (1988 fleetwood broughm d'elegance)will not pop-up high enough to not be pulled back down by the automatic closer. I assume that I need to adjust the torsion bars. (now for the dumb part) how do do it? Move the tabs up or down from the current middle position? I have never had to deal with this minor problem before. Thanks everyone! Dave

Exact same problem here. I believe this was mentioned once before. Someone even had a name for the technique used to beat the pull down by running to the trunk as soon as the button was pushed. It's a mad dash for sure, and doesn't seem like something the driver of a Cadillac should be doing. Any help?

Same problemo here. brougham geezer nailed it on the head. A mad dash to the trunk to beat the pull down.

It was said that the torsion bars different positions that the ends can sit in thus adjusting the tension. You have to go in the trunk and see what works for you

Stop by the dealer, talk to the body shop, they should have the tool for the bars.

Get one of those trunk monkeys.

Raising either bar end to a higher slot will put more tension on the bar. Can be a dangerous undertaking if improper tool or technique is used. Best done by a body shop. Years ago Cadillac made available a spring, much like the hood latch release spring on the radiator support that they advised mounting on the base of the trunk lid to allow the trunk to pop up higher to clear the pull down when the remote release button was pushed.

You can probably make a tool out of copper water pipe pretty easily. Just be careful, the force can be pretty strong.
