View Full Version : The old Cadillac reputation. Rick186 11-23-06, 01:28 PM My folks had dragged me to see friends when I was just a toddler, but I can remember the father of the hostess saying:
"Yeah, John has an OldsMOBILE, Frank has a LocoMOBILE. but, by God, I've got an autoMOBILE."
Meaning, HE HAD A CADILLAC!
So Cadillac's history was etched in this 4-year-old's mind from an early age.:) 96Fleetwood 11-23-06, 03:49 PM haha!
Get this.. my Dad was going to name me Caddy! My Mom would have nothing to do with it.
My Dad has owned over 120 Cadillacs of every era since I was born.. so you can imagine how it was etched into my slate! I~LUV~Caddys8792 11-23-06, 08:03 PM Lucky! I wasn't raised Cadillac, I was raised Chevrolet and GM in general. caddys have been etched in my mind since very young probably about 9 or 10 years old because my dad used to redo 59-60 caddys, boy do i love those. seen many come and go. supposed he says he has redone hundreds. i could go into story after story about them including the 60 coupe deville he taught me how to drive on when i was 15, and the coupes he would make into convertibles....and on and on I'm the first in my family to be this interested in cars. When I was growing up, my parents owned a variety of different car makes, but never a Cadillac. I'm a huge Ford fan, but since owning 3 Cadillacs, I thoroughly enjoy them as well.
Now, my 11 and 14 year old boys are starting to show interest in cars--one wants a Motor Trend subscription for Christmas. So I can mold them to love cars, and that's kinda cool, although they think I go overboard with my attention to cleaning our cars.

I picked out a brand new dove grey 79 Caddy Fleetwood Brougham D'elegance and he bought it. I've been hooked on Caddies ever since. That experience prob hooked me into the 77-79 style (i've had 3 ). bicentennialcadillac 11-23-06, 10:53 PM My '76 was my grandfather's. He passed in early '77, and the car was at my house by the time I was born and has been precious to me since the time of my earliest memories. My love for these cars is borne of many things, but at the root of it all is my one tangible connection to the man I was named for but whom I never met. Benzilla 11-23-06, 11:25 PM My parents on both sides are GM people, Chevrolet to be specific, while they were growing up both of their family's always drove Chevrolet's, in fact both of my grandfathers had all turquoise 1960 Chevy's when they came out. But I get my love of caddys from my Uncle Larry on my father's side. I hardly got to know him before he died in his 60s, but the man is still a god to me. There was nobody like him. There's a family story about how he was mistaken for Kenny Rogers and ended up eating dinner with a famous baseball player(can't remember who) and even signing a few autographs lol! One of his first cars was a '56 Chevrolet Two-Ten in turquoise and ivory that he drag raced, which has become an icon in my family. But anyway, he's the reason I love caddys. Not because I was old enough to be around any of his, but it seems it was passed down in the genes somehow. Nobody else in my near family really gave a shit for caddys either way until I came around. My Dad never made an effort to point out caddys to me when I was young or anything, just my Uncle Larry. Of his collection, I know among others he had a '72 Coupe Deville in metallic gray, '76 Sedan Deville in red with a white top and white interior, and '78 Fleetwood Brougham in metallic gray. All the others have slipped away with time.
Recently I also found out that my second cousin has always been a caddy man, one of his first was a light gray '52 convertible, and he is now restoring a '47 Coupe. But I don't think he would be closely enough related to rub off, I never talked to him 'till 2001. My Uncle Paul was the Caddy guy in our family, having owned Caddys since the early 1950s (which was odd as he had been a FoMoCo engineer). He would trade in every 2-3 years, and my parents started buying his outgoing car in 1975, when they bought the 1972 CDV he was going to trade for his 75 SDV. They sold the 72 to buy his 77 CDV, which later became my first car. As he got older, his health declined and he had to stop driving, but he always loved when I'd bring the 77 over to visit because I took such good care of it. I wish he'd lived longer and in better health so I could have learned some of the mechanical stuff he knew. He had a garage to kill for!
