What are some good tires to put on a 70 Caddy with stock wheels?
Those 235 75 15s are getting harder to find for passenger cars.

My car doesn't look right without them on the stock wheels. They do well in the rain, I haven't tried in the snow yet, but they are rated well on TireRack. IF Blackwalls are ok, I like the Goodyear (gag! never thought I would say that!!!) Forterra TripleArmor http://www.keisters.com/New%20Goodyear%20Apr%2006/Light%20Truck.SUV/Tire%20pages/ForteraTT.htm tires. TireRack has the and they are rated WELL. They are std tire that qualifies for the snow tire rating. But a blackwall.... Rick186 11-23-06, 01:21 PM After snooping around, I ended up with Coopers, narrow whitewall and all. :stirpot: The whole set of 4 was just under $400.00 where the dealer provided align and balance as well plus re-balance as the tires wear. The Kumhos are well respected, cheaper and test out well, from what I hear, but I simply wanted "Made in USA" on my Detroit iron. So far the Coopers do well in rain and even the deep mud we ran into down at the boatyard while helping friends winterize their boats.:bigroll: The Coopers DO make a bit of noise IMO, almost as loud as Pirellis, contrary to the ratings I've heard, but their grip is excellent.:bouncy: But what ever happened to the 2 1/2 inch PORTAWALLS one used to be able to get to cover blackwalls? I had them on my Mercury Turnpike Cruiser in 1958 and they were great. They would flip up when you hit a curb, thereby not scuffing the white part. Anyway, HAPPY THANKSGIVING. :) N0DIH 11-23-06, 02:51 PM I prefer the made in USA too. Pep Boys Futura brand is a majority Cooper tires, I have had good results with them on my 91 Bonneville. I had the SE's and LE's and liked both. The SE's were softer sidewall, but a better tread for water. The LE's cornered better in my book. The SE's with the softer sidewall you had to wait till the tire shifted and loaded up good then you could get into the corner hard. So that sucked. Goodyears are like that, that is why I despise them... Nick Campagna 11-23-06, 07:51 PM I had excellent results with the Firestone Firehawk SS20 (now Indy 500) . My 76 Eldo got a set of 255-70x15 Check them out at Tirerack.com. They have excellent wet traction, as well as dry. They are also the highest load rated car tire (108S) if I remember, though only S speed rated. V.good on mileage also. 235/75x15(28.9) vs 255/70x15(29.1) diameter comparison. I have the Bridgestone Insignia SE 200 on my car. Excellent all-season tire, made in U.S.A. quiet, comfortable, excellent treadwear and wet/dry traction. It's a really sharp looking tire, with a decent size 1 inch whitewall. I got them in 215/70-15 because I didn't notice at the time it was available in 235/75-15 W/W as well. Don't let the reviews on Tirerack scare you. There is an OEM version in certain sizes that people are compalining about, it's not the same quality as the aftermarket version. The OEM has a 380 treadwear rating, verses 560 on the aftermarket, and a lower B/B-traction/temp rating. The new Firestone FR710 is also available in W/W. I put a set of those on my mothers 1999 Monte Carlo because they have a more sporty looking black sidewall version than the Insignia. No complaints so far, also U.S.A. made. Overall, both are underated tires in my opinion, especially the Insignia, and definetly a step or two above the Coopers which are older designs. See links: http://www.roadwaywholesaletire.com/Bridgestone-Insignia-SE200.htm http://www.roadwaywholesaletire.com/Firestone-FR710.htm N0DIH 11-24-06, 11:06 AM My requirements for tires have always been personal, good deep rain grooves, stiff sidewall, and from the rain grooves, a way for the water to get out of the tread as much as possible. Goodyears almost always have very soft very mushy sidewalls. Some may like it, but honestly, it makes the tire so unresponsive going into a turn I go crazy (you actually FEEL the tire shift over on its side to load up before you actually start biting into the turn). It may give a slightly better ride, but it isn't worth the poor handling. The tires that came new in 1970 had much stiffer sidewalls than we have today, so it isn't gonna hurt the ride over new. The tire sidewall is part of the overall spring of the suspension. I honestly don't put much worry about treadwear, it is a factor, but most are in the 500's nowdays, but the higher the treadwear, the harder the tire, which starts hurting dry traction for hard cornering, but I do try to watch the traction and strive for a A/A tire. Most of the time the tires that tickle my fancy are AA's. I would probably avoid a really high treadwear tire. They would tend to break traction in a corner much easier than a lower treadwear tire. And look at the edge of the tire tread, this is where noise can be a factor. I hate noisy tires. That Insignia tire looks good, probably is pretty quiet, the other one (710) would be more noisy like a truck/suv tire. Look for a random block pattern on the outer side tread. That really helps the noise. A tire that can evacuate water from the tread best is most of the time a noisy tire, a tire that is quiet, often can't evac water well. Tradeoffs. QUOTE] Right, the Insignia looks better in whitewalls anyway. It's hard to say what the noise level is with the Firestones. They are definetly more quiet then the original Goodyear GA's they replaced. However, the Monte Carlo isn't the best vehicle for muffling tire noise, and the big 225/60-16 tire size doesn't help matters. 89fatb 11-24-06, 08:57 PM the insignia is a far better quality tire, trust me i know first hand, the 710 replaced the 440.;) Rick186 11-24-06, 10:03 PM HEADS UP! Just for the hell of it, I Googled "Portawalls" and got a whole bunch of stuff. They are made, or sold by, Lucas. But what's really interesting is - at the bottom of the Lucas home page - is a blurb for an Eldo Biarritz for $2,499.00. Since there is much about the Portawalls and concern about them chewing up your radial tire sidewalls, I won't post a direct link but give you the idea to go Google. My last experience with them was prior to 1960, before radials were common and they did no damage to the tires of that day. Anyhow, you will find that some do NOT think the (~$50.00) Portawalls chew up the sidewalls. Also, there are 3" whitewalls for a 15" tire there and a photo of a classic rod with them. | |
