View Full Version : Second row headrests

While installing a child car seat on the driver's side of the second row seating, I could not remove the damned headrest. The headrest affects the car seat's ability to fit properly so I need it out. I can easily remove the center/middle headrest, but can't remove either outboard one. Is it just me? Or do they not come out? Thanks.

Now that there are a few more of you who have bought this truck, could someone try to remove one of the second row, outboard headrests and tell me if either I am just stupid or maybe there is a defect? Thanks!

I'm getting mine tomorrow! ;) I'll check, but I would think the operator's manual would explain that.....hopefully. This SRX will be the first American car I've owned/leased for quite awhile. I know the German cars go overboard to over explain everything. :(

Just tried. All Front row and all third row and second row center come our. Second row outsides did not. I was afraid to yank any harder! :bonkers:

I see you have confirmed my findings. It is unfortunate that the outboard second row head rests are not removable since they interfere with the proper installation of many child safety and booster seats. I had read that the CTS was really poor in its compatibility with many car seats and now I see that its SRX sibling is probably the same. Damned! I guess I can try checking with the dealer to see if there is a solution to this. Thanks again!

I found the answer! While I has trying to remove the front headrests to get fitted for screens, I ran into the same problem. It turns out that at the base of the headrest (where the posts go into), there is a tiny hole for each post. Use a large paperclip to insert and push. It should free the headrests. All the headrests should work this way.

I will definitely try it tomorrow. I wonder why the front and second row outboard ones work differently from the other three? Maybe these four headrests are considered the most important ones and are thus more "secure"? Anyhow, thanks so much!

I could feel the click as the mechanism released, but I still could not remove either headrest. :banghead:

I'm going to have the same problem when I take delivery of my 2004 SRX in a few days. Will need to install 2 large child seats and planned to do them in the outboard 2nd row positions. Has anyone figured out a solution during the last 6 months?

There is a hole on the right (passenger) side of each post in the plastic piece just above the seat back. I was able to remove the headrest after pushing a paper clip and awl in both holes. It would be best to have someone assist you. I was able to do it but four hands are better than two.

I had mine removed by the saleman at the dealer the day I took delivery of the car. He seemed to have gotten it out with no problem.

What are these "screens" that I have seen people talking about?

I still cannot remove mine even after "paperclipping" it. Perhaps I really do need four hands to force it out?

The 'screens' are lcd flat panels, mounted in the headrests, used for dvd viewing, video gaming, etc..

There are a number of threads describing a diy installation. Or, one can swap out the stock headrests for similar headrests w/the lcds. :yup:

btw, Terp - isn't it better for the child to be in the center? - that headrest at least comes out. (Wouldn't want you to put soo much leverage getting the outside ones out that when it did finally give in to your increasingly agitated strength, it popped out & smacked you in the face/head - then again it is a 'headrest'..) :banghead:

Also, they are in high-back booster seats and the top of their seats hit the headrests unless I raise the headrests fully. If the booster seat hits the headrest, the seat back does not sit flush with the car's seatback--an improper installation that can negatively affect child safety. Finally, with the headrests in their upmost, raised positions, they obscure my rearward vision. Thus I NEED to remove them!

It is easier with a small awl or phillips screwdriver with a handle. A paper clip, even the larger size, is more difficult to push with. It is like riding a bicycle; once you have done it, it is easy. You will feel the pin holding the post move and the headrest is easy to lift out. Still will be easier with someone to lift. It does not take any real force, just getting both the spring loaded pins out of notch in the post.

I was not aware that rear center is the safest position. Why is rear center safer than rear outboard?

I was not aware that rear center is the safest position. Why is rear center safer than rear outboard? The rear center is statistically the safest seat in any vehicle due to plenty of impact isolation and intrusion protection from any of four directions: front, rear and sides. Think about it: if four cars were to hit you hard from all four sides simultaneously, where would YOU want to be sitting?

It's also 'safer' for the driver - you don't have to reach as far if you had to 'smack' 'em - for asking how much farther for the 100th time.. :madtalkin

Now with Navigation set I can look down and see EXACTLY how many miles and how many minutes left....love that! I always have the answer to that question!

Ok, I finally got the headrests out! I misread the earlier posts that state that there is a pinhole release for EACH of the two headrest posts. This never occurred to me because the center headrest locks and releases with only ONE of the two posts. Each of the two outboard headrests have TWO locking posts with pinhole releases. In the darkness of the truck I had only seen one pinhole for each headrest. That explains why even with superhuman strength, I couldn't get them out before! :rolleyes2
