I need some advice if you guys have it on this:

The drivers side outside mirror is loose....not the base but the mirror housing as opposed to the base on the door itself. I noticed a small adjustment hole under the mirror but it didn't seemt o do anything once it was tried. Does anyone have any ideas on how to do this? I feel its very un-Cadillac to be moving so much while driving at speed.

Thanks,

I have this on my 84 DeVille too. I can't figure out how to tighten it either.

Let me look in the book, there is screws inside IIRC, but you have some work to do to pull it apart. IIRC, you have to remove from body, the screws you are looking for are in there. Get some loctite on them if you are going in that far.

I'll double check...

Oh, were the 76 mirrors similar to the 77-up mirrors? I am not that up on the 77-92 cars. My mom had a 85 back from 85-90, but I don't remember much now. I have a 76 Body Manual that covers this sort of thing in fantastic detail.

Thanks guys, I am surprised though that no one has an answer for this....especially concerning how many were made....like 14 years or something of essentially the same mirrors.

Well I do have some info. I tightened the mirror on my '81 Seville, and as far as I can tell the deville, fleet, eldo, from early seventies till '92 (for rwd) are the same.
The repair manual from cadillac for 1981 said the mirror glass is supposed to pop out when you grab and pull just the glass/reflective part. Try as I might it would not come out, so I broke the glass, went to the junk yard, got another good glass in a mirror and put it on my car. When the glass is out you can easily get to the screws to tighten the square glass housing to the base that attaches to the door.
Now when I installed the new glass it snapped in just fine, but now the glass was loose and vibrating like nuts in the wind, the structure itself though, solid.
Ugh.
So I saw that a little piece of plastic that holds the glass in the mirror tight was now useless after the pullout, appears it is a one time use item with age. So back to the junk yard and I found plenty of these long, thin, little pieces of plastic on the pass. sides of old cadillac mirrors that would work (note that all the junk yard cadillacs driver's doors were loose as well, with that plastic piece ruined beyond use, hence the pass sides are usually better.)
So I place this new plastic piece in and presto! The mirror is tight, the glass does not vibrate and works as new. Now see wasn't that easy!
Not.

The innards are interchangeable between driver and passenger sides? Great info!!!

Here's the simple FIX. Get you a #2 Phillips screwdriver with AT Least a 12 - 18" long shank. This length wil allow you to slide the driver in between the mirror and the body of the mirror from the top side. Shine a mni-mag lite in there as well to locate both screws. Do not pry excessively against the back side of the mirror or it WILL Break! A drop of green Loctite applied to the screw before tightenig will help IF you can get it in there and not ruin the car's body paint.
