I ordered this little bugger 4 months ago , back when carosel one relesed the info that they were indeed coming out with a Diecast Model of the 1968 Wedge Turbine. If you know the Indy 500 , then this car you know has many storys surrounding it.

It was powered by a pratt and whitney tubrine engine from a helecopter. The power was fed thru all four wheels (AWD). The cars were wickedly fast all throught the month of may that year. They sat on the pole and ran 192 of 200 laps out front ....What happend at lap 192 ? The last of the 4 turbines that showed up that may died.

Imgine , haveing the fastest car in the 500 , the fastest car all month ...and have the car break just 8 laps from the sweet milk of victory lane.....

Talk to anyone that lived and was at indy dureing that time , and they all have a story about "the vaccum cleaners". Peoples first reaction to them was the lack of noise , from the stands all you could hear was the whoosh of the tires as they scremed by. The storys of the end read like something fromt he x files , theres at least 4 storys about what happend to the cars , from sabotage by lotus , to other conspracy theroys .....

A great car ....

yup , theres acutally a couple errors in that story regarding who drove the cars over the month ...

the year before was another lotus devloped turbine sometimes called the side engine ....the driver sat to the right of the turbine engine

shelby also built a pair of turbines for 1968 , but withdrew the car becuse he couldnt get it to run fast enough to get it in the race

chrysler did turbine cars from the early 60s well into the 80s , the last was based on the 81 Imperial ....

had a instructor of mine that worked at chrysler in the 60s when they were working on the first turbine that they built about 50 of for evealuation ...he took a roadtrip in it and even got it to run on wiskey ...it was a neat car ....never caught on tho becuse of the temps and metals involoved

$139, not as bad as I thought.

My cousin always said, "Buy shit you don't need when you have a job, so when you get fired you can sell it to keep living".
