I don't know anything about it (oddly enough, because I'm a history buff) but I'd try wikipedia. They'll sum it up for you short and sweet!

Yes, Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spanish_Civil_War) has a good summary of it.

You know that story that you heard from a older person. When we went to school we had to walk 5 miles in 10' snow with no shoes on. Blah, Blah, Blah Well now its my turn. We didn't have Internet to research term papers and study for finals. We had to walk our happy ass to the library and look and read hundreds of books and encyclopedias. You kids got it easy this days. <<< End of Rant Sorry I'm getting old. :thepan:

The Spanish Civil War, between 1936 and 1938, was fought between factions of the extreme right (fascists) and extreme left (communists/socialists), with groups more towards the center aligning with one side or the other (or sometimes, both). The REPUBLICANS on the left side were supported by the Soviet Union and other Communist causes. The NATIONALISTS on the right were supported by Italy, Germany, the landed gentry, the Catholic power brokers, and others who supported a strong central government.

Both sides practiced terrorism against civilians, non-military reprisals, and general bad behavior.

The Nationalist right "won", and Franco became the head of the Spanish government.

Most other European nations took sides, depending on their own political posture - conservative, strong central government states backed the Nationalists, and liberal, communistic or socialistic states backed the Republican left. The US was officially "neutral", but many of the 'intelligensia' backed the Republicans.

Spain took decades to recover from the war, and was not a major player in the economic or social progress of Europe for forty or more years.

The reason it seems confusing to some people is the labels adopted by the warring factions - we here in the US tend to think of "republicans" as being conservative, right-leaning, strong-central-government types, whereas in the SCW, that term described the anarchistic, liberal, socialist left side (which was the more 'romantic' one to support...)

Simple as that.

I'm there. Being 51, I've been able to experience technology and the lack of while in school. I got my BS many years ago before the internet (it was called the world wide web) and picked up 2 masters degrees a few years ago after the technology explosion. What a difference!
Heck I remember typing papers on a typewriter. What a PITA!
