View Full Version : Supercharging Questions I would like to install a Magnacharger Supercharger on my 2007 EXT in January when they become available. I have a couple of questions:
1) Will a supercharger increase engine noise? I have a corsa Cat Back.
2) What happens to fuel milage?
3) Can my truck still be a daily driver? Any problems with long trips?
4) What are the downsides of supercharging? B Duncan 11-19-06, 07:57 PM I am going to answer this from a general automotive perspective but this all applies to Escalades.
Yes the engine will make a little more noise - not necessarily exhaust, but additional noise from drive belt/gears and spinning rotors.
Fuel mileage can go way down depending on boost and the weight of your right foot. Normal easy driving might not change mpg that much.
Your Escalade can certainly be a daily driver if the blower is correctly set up, correctly lubricated and dialed in for you specific engine including ECU programming.
The only down side to a blower or turbo is the additional strain and corresponding increased wear on internal engine parts, transmission, and driveline in general. Again, the rate of increased wear depends much on how it's driven. This is especailly true of an engine (yours) that was not designed to run a blower. Anyone who says a blower won't affect engine wear and longivity doesn't understand the additional loads a blower puts on the engine and driveline components. One other tiny item - make sure you save all your stock parts so you can go back to stock if you sell someday - it's likely no one would touch it with a blower. That's a well informed post. BlownEscalade 11-19-06, 11:13 PM Well I've had a supercharger on my Caddy for some time now. i got 114,000km on it. On the highway I get about 13KM/L on it which is same as stock or better. Yeah you will have a little bit more wear and tear, but you shouldn't be thinking of Supercharging your Caddy if you are affraid. It's like a guy shouldn't complain about gas prices if he wants to drive a full size SUV. If you are worried about wear and tear, keep it stock and don't touch anything on it. Putting big rims on your vehicle puts on more wear and tear. Come on, you got to compromise when you wanna customize a vehicle. I have 3 or 4 wax customers with superchargers on their Escalade's (03's and 04's) and I know at least two have blown their transmissions, one has blown his twice, but he thinks it's a race car. If I supercharge or turbo charge one of my 07's I would have the trans rebuilt at the same time to avoid any problems. nofinga911 11-20-06, 08:40 AM I have 3 or 4 wax customers with superchargers on their Escalade's (03's and 04's) and I know at least two have blown their transmissions, one has blown his twice, but he thinks it's a race car. how much would it cost to have your tranny rebuilt??? TheCaddyKidd 11-20-06, 09:07 AM another insight is you might want to search for a Cadillac Dealer that installs them.. When i had my CTS i was thinking of supercharging it.. I called around and i think Martin Cadillac was the only one that would do it.. the good thing with going to a dealer is they have specific knowledge on the vehicle they are working on and also the guy that i talked to told me that the supercharger would be warrantied along with the vehicle i had it on.. they said ti was the same warranty that came iwth the vehicle which at that time i think was like 3 or 4 years or something like that.. so i would assume if the dealer warranties it then they pay for anything that can go wrong line a blown tranny and what not.. how much would it cost to have your tranny rebuilt???
Not sure, I am waiting to hear back from them via the shop I use, will post once I hear. As mentioned, noise will increase a little but this is mainly when your getting into the throttle. This supercharger is quiet during normal driving so if your foot isn't heavy, others won't know what is under the hood.... until you lay into it.
Mileage can go down, stay the same and in some cases it can even go up. It usually goes down a little after the install because people are driving harder. After that, it will pretty much stay the same as stock during "normal driving". Some people see a slight increase. I wouldn't plan on that but it can happen.
As for the transmission. You don't have to rebuild the tranny. This kit is designed to be installed with no other modifications required. Just bolt on and go. We have alot of truck/SUV customers that have been using this supercharger for over 50k miles with no problems. These are vehicles are daily drivers, maybe used for towing, road trips and they see redline during more aggressive driving. Going up a step, there are truck owners that like to drive hard... alot. Full throttle from traffic lights and stop signs can be a very common, every day occurance. The chances of breaking something will increase when the vehicle is driven like this. I'd at least go with a shift kit if the truck will be driven like this. As mentioned, noise will increase a little but this is mainly when your getting into the throttle. That's true TB, but the shop I have used since the early 80's installs more turbo's and superchargers than anyone I know personally (they do several each and every week) , and more than half of the GM cars and trucks come back for trans releated problems. I know pleanty of owners of 02' - 06' GM trucks that have had trans problems without any performance mods. A lot depends on how hard you drive your truck too. I just hope that the 07' is stronger that what was in the earlier trucks. :) mallettv 11-21-06, 09:35 AM I drove the living hell out of my 03 Escalade, seriously living hell, the only trouble I had was a belt that blew once. Mallett Cars is doing some serious stuff right now to the new Escalades, might wanna check them out. I wouldnt be worried about anything, especially if its installed by someone good. jrs05caddyext 11-21-06, 04:15 PM Good info Synergetic 11-21-06, 06:22 PM I wish TBYRNE would offer some discounted public price a TURBO. If it was low enough, I would assume there would be a few orders, maybe more! My understanding is that on the 2007's the new 6 speed transmission is much stronger. I believe that it is an Allison transmision. Can any one confirm that. copeysnack2003 11-24-06, 12:03 AM Definately not an Allison. | |
