My '97 740iL. Got it in November of '96.. today is the day it's been 10 years. 141k miles, and, shockingly, still alive.

It's getting "restored" over the winter tho... trans is about shot and I have this M5 6-speed lying around.. :)

pic is from about 3 years ago.

The body style has aged very well.

What type of major maintenance was needed to keep the 740
going for 10 years?

Despite what critics on this board might believe, older bimmers run forever.

My e30 is 26 years old, seen 265,000 miles and is still running smooth (I will admit that your 7-series looks to be in much better condition though; Michigan is hard on cars).

Looks great man. You really took car of the car, even if it was only 7 years old in the pic you posted!

Heheh.. it's not quite as nice now, but not far off of it. Leather's in great shape still.

Maintinence? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Anyone remember that commercial where the guy with the Mercedes had to keep putting cash into the bill validator on the dashboard? I Love this car, there's NOTHING like an E38 chassis when it comes to a big car that can go, stop and corner, but it's a very high maintinence car.

And Leigh's right. The engine has leakdown, compression and oil pressure readings that are within spec of a new engine.

That style of 7-Series (E38?) is probably the best looking BMW ever IMO.

I agree  I cannot stand the look of the new disgustobeast E65.. the facelift helped a little, but it went from being the nastiest frightpig of a car on the road to merely ugly.
