I found this extremely interesting since I have a 3 year old daughter. Sometimes we can't wait for them to get big enough to use a easier car seat, but now I can tell you we will think through that descision more.

Vehicle restraint systems are usually designed for adults or humans of a certain size and to work under certain situation and conditions. If the person being restrained is larger or smaller and/or falls outside of those conditions then unusual steps have to be employed to help ensure greater safety. Nothing is ever a 100% chance of working.
It's sad they lost their son, maybe others can learn from it if they're not already aware. :)
