Ever wish your FWB had a temperature gauge, and/or a Tach ?

In the Cadillac Parts For Sale of this forum Classified section, there is a mini instrument panel/console for 80's thru 1992 Broughams, which includes these instruments, (2) switches, and a little extra storage space.

Installation of these instruments is not difficult. Most FWB have a tach connection near the distributor, and the stock coolant sensor must be replaced by the one to give a signal to the temp. gauge. Then run wires to the gauges, and wires for 12 V. +, and Ground, and instrument lighting, if desired.

94-6 Fleetwoods (possibly 1993 also?) can display rpms and coolant temps (*C) via the climate control panel when in diagnostic mode.

Also, pin 13 of the red PCM connector is the hookup for tach signal when wiring an aftermarket tach.

You can? which pointer? I can't find it in my 94 quick ref book. It isn't the best as it was done later in 93, so not 100% is accurate. The 95 quickie ref is likely much better. I have speed and coolant temp, else not much else from the display are useful....

Pointer #6 is the tach. :)
Only displays the first two digits of rpm value, however (i.e., 1200 rpms would be displayed as "12").

I forget which pointer is for coolant temp, but I don't ever use that one anyway since I have a coolant gauge of my own added.

My book shows pointer 6 as blank... I'll have to get a 95 book with the pointers in it. Do you have one and can copy/scan?

-05 is Program Number
-07 is Commanded Blower Speed
-14 is Vehicle Speed
-15 is Calibration Offset (temp, mine needed tweaking...)
-18 is Sun Load
-20 is Coolant Temp Valve position
-22 is Temp Valve Position Cold
-23 is Temp Valve Position Hot
-24 is Coolant Temp
-25 is Commanded Temp Valve Position
-27 is Air Delivery Mode
-28 is In Vehicle Sensor
-31 is Ambient Sensor
-37 is EEPROM version

That is all mine shows, but more show up on the display, but I don't know what they are....

You have GOT to tell me how to do that. I didn't know these cars could do that! I have a 95 FWB.

NODIH, are you looking in the factory service manual? I only have the 94 FSM, same as you have, right?
Either way, I didn't know the FW had the tach thing either until a fellow FW owner told me. I cannot recall if the FSM has it listed or not under pointer lists. If the list you typed out is from the FSM then that would explain why I didn't know until another owner told me a couple years back.

bigblue,

Here is how you access the diagnostic mode:

With the car running, hold the "OFF" and "Temp Up" buttons down at the same time for about 5 seconds. This will bring up a segment check and then take you into computer "00" (PCM) diagnostics.

Now press the "Out Temp" button and record any codes. If you see a code prefixed by a "1", this is a history code.

Use the "Warmer" button to move on to computer pointer "01" (CCM) and repeat the procedure.

Continue through the other computer systems... 02=HVAC, 03=SIR, 04=ABS/TC , 06=TACH

If a code is being displayed, you can select the "OFF" button to instantly clear that code from the system and get rid of a Check Engine light.

That is great!! I was thinking about buying a temp gauge, but now I don't have to!! I am still going to buy a tach since the tach reading is only the first two numbers. Probably should still buy a temp gauge since that is kind of awkward, but it will do for now. Thanks again BCs71!

Did everybody forget the A-Pillar pod that was made for the Impala but will fit the FWB?

It's available at JEG'S and shown in their on-line catalog.

I got one a month or so ago but haven't hooked it up yet. It's gray plastic and has molded pods for 3 gauges.

I got
>Water Temp
>Oil Temp
>Tach
(The gauges are the electronic type that give direct reading in a red color)

And haven't had the time to install that goodie yet.
Wife went to a JoAnn Fabrics store and got material to cover the whole shebang that matches the blue cloth headliner and what now also covers the inside of the drivers side A-pillar.

The only problem was stretching the fabric to fit the bulges where the gauges go. Otherwise, installation should be straightforward.

Yep, I've been considering the same for one day as well, especially since so many have already done it. Getting fabric to go properly on that kind of a curved and protruding pod is quite difficult, and only one or two have actually done or attempted it, so I hope you have better luck.

I checked my 94 FSM last night and the tach is not listed in it (or I didn't see it listed in that big fat book). It basically skips over pointer 6 and doesn't even list it. SO I guess Cadillac wanted to keep it a secret.
The tach is kinda nice, actually. It seems to respond quickly with the throttle and doesn't lag. Only problems I see are that the tach is in the middle of the car, so you need to take your eyes off the road. Other issue is that you need to be in diagnostic mode to see the info for coolant and tach, so I'm pretty sure the climate control stuff (heat/ac) cannot be used simultaneously. Doh!

I once considered getting the A-pillar gauge pod. But my personal opinion is that it looks kinda "ricey". No offense to you guys doing the mod. The pod is just not my style in the interior of my car. Unfortunately, we are left with very few options for gauge placement.
I am using my ash tray for my coolant gauge. I plan to add a second temp gauge very soon for tranny temp in the other side of the ash tray. I am using the spaces on either side of the lighter with the metallic insert removed.

My other plan is to finally install my dashmat. Not only will it allow me to cover my eyesore cracks in the dash, but I think I'll cut a flap in it and install a tach peeking up out of it and bend the material over the top of it. It will be pushed back into the corner of the dash on the far left side where it meets the a-pillar and windshield if all goes well. Discreet is my main goal...

In 93 FWB position 6 is tach and 21 is temp (in celsius degrees)

Hmm, 24 is temp in 94. I use it often when i am not datalogging to see my coolant temp. Do you have a 93 FSM? maybe some overlap between them might fill in the gaps

sorry for long delay, but anyway - here are ´93 numbers:
00 - ECM faults
01 - CCM faults

03 - SIR faults
04 - ABS/TC faults
05 - program #
06 - engine RPM
12 - vechicle speed
16 - sun load sensor
17 - current temp valve position
19 - temp valve position (hot)
20 - temp valve position (cold)
21 - engine coolant temp

That's a great idea. I have to think about that one myself as an A-pillar alternative.

Can someone link me to the calssifieds forum? I can't seem to find it ...

In 1994, 14 is vehicle speed (IIRC this is the speed sensor reading, which is why it does not 100% agree with the speedo reading), 24 is coolant temp. I use coolant temp from time to time in this bitter cold weather, or sometimes in hot to see how it is doing.
