View Full Version : Sub-woofer jerseyMan 04-09-03, 05:33 PM Althought I am generally happy with the Bose system in my '00 STS, I thought the bass was inadequate. What I did was to have a JL Audio sub-woofer installed (JL10 IB4) - it's a 10" sub that fits into the existing hole on the rear seat panel. To drive the sub, I had a JL Audio 250/1 amp installed as well. It fit nicely onto the back of the rear seat, clean, and doesn't take up much space in the trunk. (see pics at URL below)
The entire job, install, components, tax, etc. ran just under $600 here in NJ.
Hope this helps. Since I have a 92 DTS there is no existing hole to slap in a 10" or 12" sub. I have done the 2 10" box in trunk thing and want to keep all my space. My 6 speaker Bose Gold single cd is very crisp and clear and the 6x9's are almost there for bottom end. I have done a lot of research and have decided to add an Infinity Basslink using the line level speaker inputs. It has a remote gain control you install under dash. I found good prices on Ebay for about $200. I listen to classic rock to heavy metal so I need tight bass more so than boomy. I think this will do the trick. Anyone have this sub with stock bose? I would like to hear how you like it. I was thinking of mounting in the cabin (Lots of room under dash?) Not sure yet. :) STSFreak 04-20-03, 09:54 PM I think that to get just enough bass you only need either one 10" sub or maybe 2 8" subs, that way it stays crisp and clean kcnewell 04-21-03, 09:26 AM I would tend to agree with the "FREAK" here......Crisp and clean Bass comes from 8 to 10 inch subs! Not to be mistaken for the idiots that have to have their subs so loud that everyone has to be subjected to their bad taste in music........I'm actually speaking about real sound quality here! Not just a lot of noise. I like my music LOUD! But clear and crisp. jerseyMan 04-22-03, 09:43 AM Agree with kcnewell and STSFreak - no need to overdo the bass. One 10" is more than enough to get good, clean low-end sound. Going overboard with multiple subs (especially ones that are low quality) will make the sound worse! STSFreak 04-22-03, 01:24 PM And dont buy Sony XPLODS because they will explode I have a 600w kenwood amp that I can bridge to power a 10" sub. I think a custom install in the panel behind the rear seats would be the cleanest. Does anyone recommend a sub that works well without an enclosure? The Infinity basslink looks like a good solution but since I have an amp already I could get a pretty nice sub....what to do,what to do?  jerseyMan 04-22-03, 01:30 PM See my posts above, I am quite pleased with the JL Audio (JL10 IB4 component) sub-woofer that I had installed - no enclosure (it's mounted just behind the rear seat panel.
Pics are on the web site. STSFreak 04-22-03, 04:17 PM Also, dts92...you could buy a bazooka tube.. those tend to sound pretty good and you just have to set them in the back and you can switch from car to car if you want kcnewell 04-22-03, 06:39 PM I had one of those a couple of years ago, I was very impressed with the sound! jerseyMan 04-24-03, 10:44 AM Another option, one that I used for my son's Prelude is the JL Audio 10" sub in a "wedge"...a little more costly than the Bazooka. This way you can take it out and use on another car if you're looking for flexibility. Katshot 04-24-03, 11:02 AM I had fairly good results with a powered Bazooka too in my LSC. There aren't a lot of choices in that field so it did fine.
I have been using a 10" Sony X-Plode in a "Q-Logic" enclosure in my Caddy for over a year and LOVE it. Matter of fact, I have to keep the amp turned WAY down because it produces SO MUCH bass. This IS the 2nd driver though, the first one only lasted a month. Maybe the issue you have with Sony subs is a matter of just getting a bad one like I did. STSFreak 04-25-03, 12:27 AM No...they just suck. Katshot 04-25-03, 09:04 AM Originally posted by STSFreak

Mmmmmm OK, you say so. STSFreak 04-27-03, 06:15 PM I say that because I have had more than one encounter with a bad xplod. 3 of my friends have had them xplod while pushing only 2 or 3 hundred watts to them. Maybe they were all just "bad ones". BUILDINGCTSAMG 04-27-03, 06:34 PM $600 is a rip off kcnewell 04-27-03, 10:13 PM AGREED! There are MANY better values out there without the reliability problems. STSFreak 04-28-03, 07:08 PM Yes there are. Go to circuit city and they have 2 10" subs for $79.99. that is cheap....run a couple hundred watts to one of those and you will have great sound. Dead Sled 05-01-03, 07:49 PM im liking my 4 12's :D but rarely do I ever crank em up to make use of it
Im thinking about getting a casket and making one half subs and and the other half a cooler that I can slide out of the car STSFreak 05-04-03, 04:33 PM That'd be cool. SoundAdvantage 05-28-03, 01:12 AM Hello ALL :farting:
Now thats bass! When it comes to the sub of choice it really depends on what type of music you mostly listen to.
If you mostly listen to alternative, Rock, and Heavy metal then 10" subs would work best for you, but if you mostly listen to R&B, Hip Hop and Rap then 12s or 15s would work best to produce those lower frequency's. I like 12" subs and thats what i use in my cars, mainly dual voice coils in sealed enclosures. Amps are just as important as your subs, i like to keep a 4 ohm load on my amps so they run cool and minimize current drain. I am in to sound quality myself so i run everything through a 3-way crossover with a bass remote to get all the frequencys adjusted properly. Your sound should be as unique as your individual taste in music.
Mike HelloCadillac 11-20-03, 12:52 AM Sorry to ressurrect such an old thread but if you are looking for a none "boomy" tight great SQ sub i would reccomend you to the infinity Perfet 12 or perfect 10 (whichever size suits you best) it has a very loooooow end keeps things undistorted and clear. maybe a nice rockford fosgate 1501 to run it? (sorry for sp) dfb052686 11-30-03, 01:35 PM wouldn't getting a passive sub(10") in a small enclosure(0.75' 3) with a crossover similar to a bose acoustimass system(speaker inputs from amp, and speaker out puts to 6x9's in shelf) if you have no idea what I am talking about, see pics hey everybody,
I was just watching this forum and I too would like to get 2 10"'s and an amp. I'm trying to get all this under the back bench in the ext. I was thinking of 2 AW1000Q from Audiobahn but as I heard from previous posts that the Q flame line is better. If I were to get either the 2 AW1000Q or the 2 Q Flame 10" ones mentioned earlier, what would be the best amp for the operation? I'm not looking for the most expensive but just really what you would all advise to put with these subs.
Thank you Hypermikem 12-10-03, 09:46 AM I just got me a 2001 Deville. It's a beautiful car(pearl white). BIg and roomy, and very quiet on the inside. I can actually have a cell phone conversation without having to shout. That being said, I have the standard model, which means I don't have some of the extras that came with the luxury version of the deville. I'm not sure about the stereo. I understand that they came with Bose systems? I don't see Bose anywhere on the main head. I haven't really had a chance to check it out. Anyway, I like the sound for a stock stereo, however, I do like my Rock to have a sort of kick in the base drum range. I like to hear a good drum solo by Rush's drummer crisp and clean. I was thinking that I wanted to keep the original stereo in place and just upgrade all the speakers, add a 10" free air sub, and an amp. I was thinking about an aftermarket head, but I don't want to have to worry about attracting thieves with my awesome looking deck, so if at all possible, I want to keep the existing stock system in place and just add more power and a good freeair sub that will play my Rock just the way I like it. I am going to see Aerosmith & KISS this month and I want this done right before then so I can Tailgate in style. I know there are some that feel that stock stereos in Caddys are sufficiently good, and they are for the most part, unless you like it loud and clear, just like you hear it in a concert. Crisp, clean, and able to hear every single instument being played clearly. AND LOUD!! Is this vison of mine possible without changing the stock head? I just know if I get an expensive deck, it'll get ripped off. I just want the appearance of a stock stereo with the performance of aftermarket stuff. is this possible with the right speakers and amp?? Thanks in advance. MeanGreenCaddy 12-12-03, 01:31 AM i just put in 3 Visonik 12''s in a Band pass enclosure with 1600watt Hifonics amp in the trunk of my 1998 eldorado to add to the bose system. Now i have all the bass i'll ever need. c_a_s_2 02-22-04, 02:34 AM Althought I am generally happy with the Bose system in my '00 STS, I thought the bass was inadequate. When you say the sub fit nicely into "back of the rear seat" do you mean esxacly that, or were you referring to the rear (horizontal) deck ? I am trying to figure out how to add some bass to my 98 eldo that's a convertible, by Coach Builder's Limited. Thx! lac on 100 spokes 04-12-04, 09:41 PM no offense to some of you, but you are getting robbed. $600 for 1 10" and an amp (jl audio) is a rip off. even with installation. id install a wall in your car for that price. i own my own stereo shop/ biz. ive been installing professionally for over 8 years, and i have quite a bit of knowledge in this field id say. first off the following brands are overrated and or overpriced: fosgate, jl, audiobahn, kicker, eclipse, etc. if you want some good reliable gear go with something like memphis, phoenix gold, clarion, boston acoustics, mb quart, etc. for equilization and processors, go with audio control. a few of those are pricey, but you definitely get what you pay for. car audio is no exception to this. im not trying to be an *******, before people try jumping down my throat, im just here to try and help you people out. semiauto 04-13-04, 03:15 AM Dont forget Diamond Audio. They are some of the best. | |
