: Negotiating with Gulati!

There was an ad on Craigslist for a 92 Sentra, asking $1000. My step...[cousin?] needed a car and his English is crap. He's from the French-African section of my family.

Anyway, this guy was selling it for his neighbors. We got there and discovered that it was actually a 93 Altima GXE with 174k. The guy wanted $1000 so we talked about the condition and I haggled him down finally to $500. The blower motor needs replacing, there's a small rust spot, and thats it. It drives really nicely, the suspension is good and firm, and it shifts perfectly. There was a tap at startup that went away -- it had apparently been sitting for a month. Tires are brand spanking new.

Then, I asked for $400. We settled, finally, on $450.

So yeah, a perfectly good 93 Altima with a 5-speed, wood trim, recently serviced AC, Bose (we'll need to toss that), and other luxury doodads ended up being $450. He couldn't find the title (neighbor's wife was home but she said only her husband knew where it was, and couldnt get a hold of him) so we're coming back Saturday. Left a $60 deposit.

The original plan was to take home a 92 Sentra for $800, and we left with a loaded 93 Altima for $450. What a nice day. I think I'll buy it from my step...[cousin?] when he goes back to France.

I didnt take pics because my camera is missing. Its just a blend-in-with-traffic black Altima.

Thai, French, African--I'll bet there's some Persian in there too. Like a rug merchant.

That's a steal.

Good deal! I once haggled a dealer who wanted $600 for a '78 Fleetwood Brougham down to $90! :)

I should have asked the guy if he had a teenage daughter to throw in the trunk.

Do you pronounce your last name jew-latti? (no offense to our Hebrew brethren...just a cheap gag)

Damn, nice work! My dad is pretty good too. He got a 90 Ford Ranger from $900 to $500. But then he suddenly couldn't find the last $50 so we got it for $450. I was laughing the whole way home.

I almost bought a 1992 Oldsmobile Ninety Eight Regency Elite for $1200! The owner wanted $1600 for it, but I talked him down to $1200. Heck, I'd be driving that right now if that dealer that wanted my car didn't just buy like 5 cars at the auctions. Oh well, I'm happier in a Cadillac.
