: Add Engine Oil alert

I happened to check my oil the other day and the dipstick was dry. This was after driving about ten miles so I know the engine was warm. I waited a few minutes and checked it again. It was still not registering. I added a quart of oil and everything was fine. My question is....Shouldn't the "Add engine oil" alert have shown up on my dash display if the oil was low enough not to register ? Is there any way you can check to see if these message lights are working ? I do get some messages like Low Fuel, Possible Freezing Conditions, etc. Quite a while ago I did read a post which I thought was a joke. They said some of the Cadillacs have short dipsticks. I can't find the post now but I believe they even gave the proper length of the dipstick.

The "add engine oil" or "check engine oil" message will come on when the system is 2 quarts low.

Which, with a N*, is usually right about the time it goes off the stick

I agree with Dadillac & Codewise. Maybe a bad or unpluged level sensor?

Mine is off the stick by the time the alert comes up. It takes 1.5 quarts or so to get to the middle of the stick again.
