im kinda confused about this code retrival thing i pressed the two buttons and i got P036 S036 and S044 i dont know what they mean and then once those went by it said PCM? and i didnt know what it wanted me to do can someoen tell me what each button does on the console and what i should be checking for? and what does each thing mean? cause i am confused out the ass
Capn, If you really want to be able to fix this car yourself, or at least know what is going on before taking it to a dealer, get the service manuals. These cars are very difficult to diagnose without them. The Service Manuals (2 to a set) by Helms cost about $90 new and will save you many times that if you use them properly. :)
When the readout showed PCM it was waiting for a command from you. If you press the Fan High you indicate "Yes" if you press Fan Low you indicate "No".
Each response by you will lead you to another mode or readout.
P036 = Exhaust Gas Recirculation pintle position out of range.
Usually this means the EGR valve is sticking.

S036 = Electronic Leveling Control Compressor shorted to ground or open.
Likely a loose, damaged wire, or dirty connection to the compressor that controls the rear shocks. Get under the car and look around, wiggle the wires that make this connection. Repair as required
S044 = Lift/Dive Signal Fault
1. If you wait more that 15 seconds after turning the key to the "ON" position you will get this error code. (Likely orgin)
2. Engine is started in drive. (I hope this can't happen)
PROM in PCM not seated properly. (Not likely)
i have a "chitlins" manual and i have alot of technical know how and i have the resorces where i dont need to go to a dealership (my shop teacher is a former cadillac technician). but it does seem like a pair of manuals would really help.

I have many years experience building engines; stock, high performance, classic,
etc. Shortly after getting my 93 STS I realized that to know how to work on these cars and engine systems you must have the factory service manuals.
I grew up on Motorsís Manual and Chilton but they just do not have enough information, in detail, on these late model Cadillacs.
While I hated to give in and buy the factory manuals, I must admit they have been worth it.
