I'm trying to listen to my mp3 player through the cassete deck of my 97 Deville using a cassete adapter. Every time I put the adater in the deck it plays for a second or two then the deck reverses and it plays for another second or two and then ejects the adapter. I can't get it to stay in. Has anyone else ever had this problem and if so how did you solve it. Is the deck looking for something thats not there or is the adapter bad? It does work in my wifes Toyota though with no problem so I think the issue is with the Caddy deck. Also regular cassettes work fine.

GM has a funny way of doing things there is a specific adaptor that you are going to need for your car. It must be the one that will work in GM's

There's probably some kind of sensor in the deck that is checking for slack or tension in the "feed" spool. This helps to reduce the odds that a real cassette will spill out into the deck, jamming the mechanism. Thus the quick eject.

I know in my 97 Suburban I have to turn off the stereo and hold tape for three seconds and then insert the cassette adaptor. It might be different in ur Deville.

I use an iPod in my '98 STS with a cassette adapter. Here's how to make it work:

Turn the radio off.
Push and hold the source button until you see the cassette icon flashing on the display. Should be about 10 seconds.
With the radio still off, insert the cassette adapter.
Turn the radio on. It will automatically select cassette as the source.
You can now listen to your mp3 player or select any other source. The adapter will remain in your deck until you hit the eject buttton. If you eject it, simply follow the steps above to get it back into the deck.
I simply leave my cassette adapter in all the time.

Good luck!
