I have a `1998 Catera. I was checking the plugs for misfiring and noticed a rigid black vacuum hose coming up on the drivers side from the tranny. It was broken on top and brittle, but I cannot find where it attaches. I think it could be the cause of my misfiring and rough engine and shifting problem. A mecanic told me I neded a coil pack, but would not the open vacuum line cause the same problem? Thanks for any assistance. BJ

. . . . . but would not the open vacuum line cause the same problem? . . . . . . . . . . .

It might . . . . if it actually were a vacuum line:

Are you sure it's a vac line? There's a breather line from the tranny that comes up around the back of the engine. It's around 5-7 mm in diameter and has a bend near the end of it.
