View Full Version : Radar Detector Hardwire for 05 DeVille naperguy12 10-21-06, 05:17 PM Does anyone know of a good accessory wire under the dash or in one of the A-pillars to hardwire my radar detector ? Obviously I'm not worried about a ground-wire that can be anyplace.....
HELP - please ---- gonna go start this now so will check back shortly. Thanks in advance. I_Finally_Have_A_Cad 10-21-06, 05:41 PM I have a good idea: don't speed. It's funny how everyone thinks they are the best driver in the world and think they can handle really high speeds. Well it turns out that most Americans suck at driving. Which category are you in?
I know my words won't stop you so I may as well help you so you don't end up killing yourself or your car. (Although I would rather you do it here than on the road) Whenever you want to borrow some power from somewhere, you need a multimeter and better yet a wiring schematic. If you know how and why to use those then i don't know why you asked in the first place. If you don't, then have someone with the proper knowledge do it. Blown Z 10-21-06, 07:10 PM I guess no WOTs for you huh?
Anyway back to the original topic, I came across this for hardwiring RDs. I don't know if the wires are the same color for our cars but it's a good starting point.
CTS-CTS-V FAQ: Valentine 1 Radar Detector installation (http://www.cadillacfaq.com/faq/answers/v1install.html) Just plug it in the cigarette lighter. That way you can remove and return it easily for a refund when you get a ticket with a Laser equiped police car. They clock your speed in .003 seconds. You are busted before the radar detector warning hits your ears.:banghead: That's if your detector is laser equipped. I do ride alongs with police and I can tell you that you cannot beat Laser speed guns! And the laser guns are cheaper then the old radar guns. Guess what that means. :tisk: Blown Z 10-21-06, 08:36 PM Just plug it in the cigarette lighter. If there are cars in front of you, it is possible to pick up laser scatter. Having a "rabbit" in fron helps. It also helps to have a laser jammer too. :lildevil: HITMONEY 10-22-06, 03:18 AM I have a good idea: don't speed. How about just move over to the right.
Funny how BlownZ asked a specific wiring question and you feel the need to drag your soap box in.
:suspect: turbojimmy 10-22-06, 06:43 AM Jeezus people, if you don't know the answer then move along. I don't know how you get from an innocuous question like where to get juice for a radar detector to assuming the OP want's to travel 'at really high speeds' and will wind up killing himself or his car. Lighten up Francis.
I have a radar detector in my car because the local cops on my route to work take great offense to me traveling on 'their roads' through 'their' crappy little towns instead of taking the jammed up highways. The limits are set artificially low and go up and down all over the place. My detector has saved my countless times. The reality is that very few PDs in my area are using laser. NJ State Police are still using X-band for gawd's sake. Most local municipalities are Ka.
Annnnnyyyway, tap into your cigarette lighter circuit. It will stay on for 10 minutes after you shut the car off and then turn off. If you want it on all the time move fuse #s 22 and 23 under the hood to the outside position (you'll see what I mean when you look at it).
Jim naperguy12 10-22-06, 09:36 PM GEEZ people --- How about sticking to a topic instead of throwing your personal views around!!!! If ya don't know then STFU. Anyway, for those who actually care - I ran the power wire from the fuse box under the rear seat. The main ground was right there too. Tucked the wire under the trim panels on the side and up the drivers A-pillar, across the headliner right to where I wanted it. Oh - my cigarette power stays on permanently - I tried that and it doesn't go off after 10 minutes. I basically tapped the power into the fuse for "night vision" seeing as I don't have that option anyway. Blown Z 10-23-06, 10:29 AM Good to see that it worked out! What kind of RD do you use? Also, are you in Naperville, IL? Oldfatslob 10-23-06, 07:30 PM I've got mine hardwired from the battery, in through the door panel, under the dash, then to the middle of the floor behind the removeable duct panel that goes under the floor where I have a cigarette lighter Y thing, one for the radar detector, and one for the power inverter for my laptop with gps, all nicely tucked away, no car wiring harness to fool with, and on their seperate fuses. naperguy12 10-23-06, 07:43 PM It's a passport 8500x50 and yes in Naperville IL. The wiring went just fine direct from the fuse box. Are you a "local" too ? Blown Z 10-23-06, 10:52 PM It's a passport 8500x50 and yes in Naperville IL.
