Summary: V is 90% the car for 50% the price. Unfortunately there isn't a cheaper way to get the remaining 10%...

First and foremost, the M5 interior is LACKING. In my mind the V's current interior is just fine and loaded with options. This M5 was way too plain for $100k, with the only additional feature to speak of being the performance seats that had inflatable sides.

Under the hood it was neat to see a V10, although it didn't look much bigger in cubes than the LS2 (don't know how big it really is). Dual intake but no power adder, car did not have the low end torque of the AMG 55 Mercedes that I drove ($15k or so less). It did have lots of pull upwards of second gear though, and had a very good paddle shift trans. I'm big on paddle shifters because they really are faster than sticks and almost as much fun.

The car was more nimble than the V, but I couldn't tell if the chassis/suspension was that much better or if it was just because the car was smaller and lighter. Again, can't justify the $50k difference here.

Perhaps the quality is a lot better, but I couldn't speak to that since the car had all of 12 miles on it (old roomate had just brought it over from the dealership). I'm of course as bias as anyone else here, but $20k down and a $1200 car payment just doesn't seem to be as rewarding as my V. It's sometimes good to feel how great this car is for the money even with the lingering probs...

My bud has an M6 and I feel the same way...not jealous of it even for a second.

My dad bought the m5...everytime i go home the first question i always ask, "can i go drive the M?" It might have 10% more power, but 10% is a good amount, the torque hits much earlier and that SMG3 is soooo fast. Also, BMW is fine with Dinan mods :)

M5's V10 is 5 liters. 507HP.

I don't like the styling, and fo $50k more, that a s**tload of mods to do to any V.

The e39 M5 feels like a better car. Not as fast, but a better car.

Ya know, I'd actually take a CLS55AMG over an M5 due to the fact that the CLS has the nicer interior IMO and it's got a lot more low end torque. Also, I think the CLS is better looking too...

I think the CLS is one of the best looking cars on the road today. I'd take a CLS63 AMG over an M5 in a heartbeat. The ONLY thing I don't like about it is the humongous clock they put in the gauge cluster.

I have a tentative order on a 6-speed M5.. I just don't like SMG. It's Ugly, iDrive sucks and they are not reliable.

That being said.. get one on the track and it's amazing. What is keeping me from buying the '07 is that, well.. the '88 M5 that I own is more "fun" even if it's over 200hp down on the 07.

As far as the M5 vs the STS-V.. is it better? I think the Cadillac is a lot better looking (Although the BMW is so hideous most any car can do that) but I'm partial to the STS. The BMW is a better car as a performance sedan in many ways, but for $90k, it ought to be.

funny yall should mention this> I beat the dog $hit out of a new m5 with my LS7 V about a week ago. the M driver wanted to do it 2 more times, and I did! 1st he didn't know what a V was, but he did know what the Ls7 was. we ran from about a 10mph roll up to about 140ish he was wayyyyy behind.

A CTS-V smoked an E60 M5? Either he wasn't driving it right or you modded the snot out of your car.

If he has an LS7 in his V, I would have to say, yes, he "modded the snot out of it".

That torque curve the LS7 has walks all over the V10 in the M5.

My dream Cadillac:

1991-92 Brougham D'Elegance that's modded so it can take down a '06 M5 on the PCH. Outhandle, outbreak and outaccelerate it. I believe the Brougham is the lighter car, or the weight is very close, so the weight thing can be fixed, or overcame.

The M5's curbweight is 4012, the Brougham is 4277. Good God the M5 weighs alot!

Mmmmmm, I don't know. He just did an engine swap, that's all. ;)

:D c5racr1, have you had a chance to get any 1/4 track times yet with your SuperV ?

Didn't see the LS7 part! oops!

And yeah, the new M5 is really heavy.. weighs 600 lbs more than my M5 which is not exactly a light feeling car.

Why does the new M5 weigh so much?

Lots of sound deadening, high strength steel, lots of electrical gizmos, that stupid SMG Transmission, etc...

It is the depreciation factor that kept me out of the V. As much as I am a die hard Cadillac fan, I can't justify the depreciation factor of the STS-V, CTS-V and XLR-V.

Although you will pay more for the M5, or M6 or whatever, the end game is that they will retain much more of their value and desirability than the Cadillac.

A friend of mine who has a dealer license gave me the recent sellings of V's at auction around the entire country... it made me sick.
