My 2005 STS has a steering noise when parking or backing out of garage. The noise is sort of a groaning sound with vibration that can be felt in steering wheel and drivers floor. The noise is very much like a system that is low on power steering fluid, but no leaks are evident and the fluid level is good. The noise is worse when the the car has been driven and then let stand for an hour or more. The dealer has not been able to duplicate the noise when I leave it with them. They did replace the rack for a high pitch squeeling noise, but that had no effect on the groaning noise. Seems to me the problem must be in the pump. Has anyone else had any experience with the problem and have any suggestions?
I have the same occasional problem with my Sierra Denali pickup. Entirely different steering mechanisms, though. There are some TSBs out for the trucks. Don't know about the STS.

Thanks for the info. The noise noted in the bulletin is not the noise that I posted, but I also have the rattle noise. So, at least I have the amo to get that repaired. Thanx again.

My local dealer was finally able to duplicate the noise in the shop. They said they contacted engineering at cadillac and they said all of the v8s have this noise and at this time they have no fix. They did correct the rattle that is indicated on the service bulletin that is mentioned by malcom.
My son's Impala SS has the same condition. It turns out the steering intermediate shaft lubrication problem is very widespread in GM cars and trucks. The dealer fix is to remove the steering shaft, use a lubrication kit to inject lube into the seals, exercise the parts, and then reassemble. The fix only lasts for another 10K miles or so (about as long as the previous fix, replacement, lasted). According to some sources, the problem has been around since 1997. I'd have the dealer check into this possible cause.
Is there any way to do this on the home front? I also have this noise just every now and then: dealer never could recreate and now out of warrenty. Complaint was registered several times prior to end of warrenty. Any reference to this problem in Cadillac or GM service documentation?
Worst part is not knowing if it will fail on the road somewhere in the sticks.
Thanks in advance.

My 2007 STS-V has this noise. When moving the steering wheel while backing out or moving forward very slowly (notice it most when pulling out of parking spot). No understood problem other than vibration and grinding noise with wheel shudder.

I posted about this problem before. I also had it on my jaguar and it is the same problem. The reason I got was that the seals are to tight, and in dry weather can make noise. One temp fix was to find a parking lot, and do donuts ( not fast mind you, but the engine has to have some rpm ) .
Make sure the the steering wheel is completely turned all the way till you hit the lock and it can go no further. Then turn the wheel slightly back the other direction and then bump it off the lock again in the orig. direction. Do a bunch of times.
I was told that this forces steering fluid up the shaft and lubes the part that makes the noise. It worked for a week, then I would have to do again. ..
Jag came out with a kit that fixed the problem with new seals.
The Caddy .. Dealer said no fix... So ... I do slow donuts and bump the steering wheel off the locks when the noise gets bad.
Strange.. Strange to have somebody see you doing it.. but, it seems to work for a bit.

some years back on some fwd gm cars, there was an issue with the intermediate steering shaft that caused a clicking or grinding noise, generally when going through turns. i recall that it didn't necessarily involve replacing the shaft, but it require some grease or lubricant to solve the problem...totally different animal, but i thought i would mention it.
