I installed a new pioneer head unit yesterday. Everything works great except if the car is off for an extended amount of time the deck loses power and I lost all my settings. Everything in the car works but this one issue. I used my multimeter to trace every wire on the stock harness in the car. I found 2 of them with power. One only has power with the key turned forward (not back) and the other has power with the ignition off but i think for only so long. Is one of those wires supposed to have power 24/7? if so which one?

thanks,

chuck

You need to run your own memory wire to the battery or to a better source. I.E. cigarette lighter.

i will try that this weekend. that should work. I would tie into the cig. lighter but that shuts after a certain amount of time also.

There are sources in the car that are on 24/7 just have to find them. I'm not 100% where mine is, I didn't install my HU. But I do know it's not to the battery. Easiest way is to leave the car off for 10 minutes and get out the DMM.

Where can I find how to install and remove a head unit? What to do first, where screws are, etc. I don't know how, and I have some head unit work to do in 3 cars.

You take off the the ring around the HU to reveal 4 TINY screws, unscrew those and pull out.

This always worked for me. Just poke every wire you can find under the dash with a lest light. When you find one that is hot when the car is off, and the key not in the ignition, start the car, and make sure it stays hot. Turn off the car, wait ten minutes, and check it again. Get a splice connector, and you are done. Never failed me in 20+ years.
