90 Brougham Tranny ?
I am the proud owner of a 1990 Antelope Cadillac Brougham. I purchased it in '02 with 54,000 miles on it and it now has 66,000. She is in almost perfect condition. And she has the 5.7 engine. (I am no mechanic, so forgive my lack of proper terminology.) Anyway, I had a new transmission installed in Oct. '02 and have not any problems since - transmission wise any way. I drove the car Friday with absolutely no problem - no stahls, delays in shifting, acclerating, no smells, unusual noises, nothing. Saturday night, suddenly the car will only go about 2 miles an hour in all gears. My daughter's young man, who is a mechanic, but only 20 years old, assures me that the transmission is burnt up...even though the transmission fluid is still red and not burnt nor is it leaking. He said he smelled a burnt smell when he looked it over for me.

I just find it difficult to believe that it was fine one day and suddenly it is completely broken the next.

What can I check before I purchase a rebuilt transmission and have him and his friend install it for me?

Okay all you cadillac guru's - what about checking the Vacume Hose and Torque
Converter? Could either of these create such a serious problem? I am going crazy driving my daughters Bright Yellow Ranger and miss my caddy...:crying:

Usually a tranny will give some sort of of sign. Slippage, burning smell, leaks, even vibration, or something like that. Can you rev the car up in park or nuetral. Somethings if you have poor engine performance and your trying to floor it to get it to move the trans will stay in first gear. I'm also pretty sure that car has the 200r4 tranny (the overdrive tranny) which doesn't have a vacuum modulator. If you smell something burning and your tranny fluid is still red, maybe it your catalytic converter.

Does the check engine light come on?

Electronic problems can often go mis-diagnosed as a complete tranny failure when in fact it is not the case, and electronic bugaboos can do exactly that, they can cause a vehicle that was otherwise fine, to change suddenly without expectation. Sometimes the car will throw codes you can check for something like this (and will illuminate the SES light) and others on the forum can describe the procedure for retrieving these. Sometimes it wont and it will take a capable dealer or transmission tech to figure it out, but in any case, complete transmission failure should not be immediately diagnosed.

YEAH responses- Thank You so very much...
Yes can rev the car in park - there was no leak, but now that it has been parked in front of the house for two weeks there appears to be a very slow leak from where the tranny goes into the drive shaft - slight burning smell - red tranny fluid - 200r4 tranny yes - no check engine light - self diagnosis gives 132 and 140 and the list I have does not tell me what these codes mean.

If anyone knows the definition of 132 and 140 that would be a big help.

Aso, if it is catalytic converter - what would be the next step for us to do?
