View Full Version : New to the Forum - BOUGHT a CTS-V... Any Advice? C66 Racing 10-09-06, 11:18 AM Hello all,
Just joined the forum this morning as I'm seriously looking at a slightly used 06 or new 07 CTS-V for my daily driver. Spent hours this morning reading threads on the car, but any current advice on buying new vs used (07 warranty is my biggest driver for buying new) or the car in general is welcome.
About me:
I'm an Active Duty Navy Submariner, 19 years and counting. Current cars include an 02 Corvette Z06 which I used as a daily driver 01-03, then turned into a race car and have been using for track days and racing in the SCCA Touring One class for four years now, an 03 F350 which is my tow vehicle and current daily driver, and an 03 Chevy Trailblazer EXT which is my wife's daily driver. New to this forum, but long time member of most of the Vette forums on the internet.
Other cars I'm considering:
C6 Corvette Coupe
Audi S4
BMW 335i
I'm really torn on the 2 seater vs sport sedan. I drove an 06 CTS-V this weekend and loved it. Overall feel was remarkably similar to my Vette, but with a back seat. As I get most of my need for speed out on the track in my Z06, I don't think I need the 2 seat sportscar to commute in and having a back seat would be very useful for those nights out with my daughters or other couples.
Since I've been on the Vette forums for years, I think I'm aware of most of the negatives that may come from the CTS-V such as oil consumption, diff whine and leaks, etc, all of which are also Vette issues, but more than happy for any input the forum has.
Thanks in advance for your thoughts!
 mike041357 10-09-06, 11:46 AM I have an '05 with 12K (bought new) that I use as a daily driver and love it. Yeah, there are a few quirks, but try to have this much 4-door fun driving anything else (for the price).
Do a UUC or M&M shifter, get rid of the CAGS, and then go from there.
That new warranty is kick-ass. But you can weigh that against an extended on an '06 as well.
Good luck! mike041357 10-09-06, 11:47 AM Did I say "M&M"? Shoulda been B&M.....but you already knew that :yup: AHHHH BUBBLEHEAD !!!!!
;)
Welcome :welcome: Boomers or Fast Attacks ? (I'm betting Boomers seeing the WA location) C66 Racing 10-09-06, 12:13 PM Thanks for the advice Mike. B&M and cags were put on my Z06 during the first week of ownership and will likely be early mods on a CTS-V if I pull the trigger.
CIWS,
Currently Boomer, but done both. Los Angeles class out of Norfolk, Improved Los Angeles class out of Norfolk/Pearl, Ohio class out of Kings Bay, and now on another out of Bangor. Assume your forum name refers to a Phalanx? CIWS,

Yeah, went to sub school in 83 (ESM ET) Navy tried forced conversion to STS , I chose a Captain's Mast (long story) and sent to be a Skimmer puke. :D
That's cool you've worked both sides, what's your preference ? I assume Boomer duty if you're married. urbanski 10-09-06, 02:00 PM lmfao @ navy lingo :p
welcome! The Tony Show 10-09-06, 02:04 PM I chose the Captain's Mast when I was having trouble with my tranny skimmer puking.
Oh- you guys are talking about the Navy? Nevermind then.... naiculnila 10-09-06, 03:13 PM the V is def. a unique vehicle with character.
if you can deal with the many problems then by all means.....BUY TWO!
The car is amazing.
The thing to consider is the constant hassel from the many many horrible dealers out there in the event you need service.
If you are one of the lucky few to have a good dealer...then the V is defenitly worth it over the S4 (drove it and it was horrible); not sure on the 335i but i hear good things.
----------
My current situation is that i love my car but i can't handle the dealer denying me service on a leased vehicle.
One differential, one transmission, 5 panels, 4 navigation units, a radiator, water pump and a new set of tires every few thousand miles is enough to go to court to try and get out of it.
GOOD Luck with yours! Bought a very slightly used 05 last month (had only 7500 mi on it) - so far have nothing but good things to say about the V. Got a sweet price and an even sweeter ride.
Have not noticed the many flaws talked about in these forums, but am prepared. Bought the car from a Chevy dealer and got the extended warranty and he put new tires on it. Afterwards, contacted local Caddi dealer and met with them. Superior Caddilac in KC, MO made me feel like a king for owning a V. They have a very friendly and customer oriented Service Manager who introduced me to the tech whose sole job is to work on V's. Asked all sorts of Q's about modding, warranty and TSB work - they are Mod friendly and want me to be happy with my car. Offered (w/o me asking) to do some of the performance TSBs and said they'd do some of the preventative mtc on the first oil change to stave off any probs like those talked about here.
Bottom line - I love the car, having a blast as my daily driver, have not seen probs, but have a good loacal dealer willing to take care of me if I do. I am not unhappy I bought a used one - just get the xtended warr to be protected. GOTTSPD 10-09-06, 03:55 PM You have a vette, don't get another. How boring... ;)
Anyway, I love the V. I'd get '06 used and with the loads of $ you'll save, buy the extended warranty and get going on some mods! My V gets lots of compliments. I have the oft discussed and maligned optional/accessory rims and I think they look great on the black. Aside for the MB CLS, to me it's the best looking 4 door car out there. A couple of folks have even asked me what I've done to the car because it looks so mean!
S4's look just like A4s and while they have great interiors, they are pretty small inside.
I can't knock a 3 series, other than they are not quite peppy enough for me (other than a M, which you didn't mention) and are also rather small inside.
V's rock!

Suprised you are one of the few that didn't buy it after a test drive.:canttalk:
The V is a hoot. BigFred 10-09-06, 10:35 PM Since you have a Vette (although I really like the C6), I'd go with the V or the 335i. I loaded up my V this weekend and it was fun for all! C66 Racing 10-11-06, 10:49 PM Welcome.

Well... that was two days ago!
Thanks for the advice all. I caved and bought the 06... uh... two days ago. Not sure what I've been doing since then... other than spending hours driving around. Car is a blast to drive and I'm continually amazed at how much like my Vette it feels. I have to keep looking in the back seat to remind myself that I'm driving a coupe around. Though I've only owned it two days, I've already received numerous positive comments on the car. After I've driven it for about a week or so I'm going to put my initial impressions to "paper".
In answer to some of the questions or comments posed above. I prefer the mission of the fast attacks, but the boomer schedule is much easier on my family.
While I lived in Memphis TN from 02-05 I raced with the sales manager and one of the service manager from Superior Chevrolet in KC and agree that they are great people. I was very happy with the dealership I bought the car from, McCann Cadillac in Fife Washington, but unfortunately they are over an hour from me. I've got to develop a relationship with the smaller Caddy dealer on this side of the Puget Sound.
Where's the best place to pick up a CAGS? :D CadiKing2006 10-12-06, 12:19 AM I bought my CAGs off ebay and its been great StealthV 10-12-06, 07:17 AM There is only one --> !CAGS Eliminator (http://www.stealthv.com/cagselim.htm)

Yeah that's the way it was. Excitement in F.A.s but a better home life / schedule with boomers.
Really glad to hear you decided to give the V a try and from the sound of things you've been enjoying the car :D Congrats on your new "Fast Attack"
iCAGS from StealthV to get rid of CAGS, or go with a PCM tune  rand49er 10-12-06, 08:21 AM Might be better deals on '06s than on an '07, and I believe the differences negligible (?). As with heavy, I'm surprised you left the dealer without putting down a deposit after your test drive. Which color you gonna get? :lildevil: heavymetals 10-12-06, 01:27 PM Where's the best place to pick up a CAGS? :D
Get that feature turned off when you send the PCM to Stealth for a tune. :D
The title for this link should be changed as you are no longer considering......
But DOOMED. C66 Racing 10-15-06, 12:10 PM Which color you gonna get? :lildevil:
Bought the Black 06. :D

post up some pics :) calicadi 10-15-06, 03:38 PM Welcome to the club, rustpicker! I'm a former CPO and fellow SCCA member. I have an '04 V that I autocross. Putting a roll cage in my Z06 was a decision I agonized over for years. After seeing the touring results from this years Runoff's, doesn't look like the CTS-V is the car to have in T2 at Topeka, though it did really well at Mid-Ohio. Autocrossing it is probably a much wiser way to go. | |
